Concealed carry jacket?

A couple of problems I have with concealed carry at work:

  • I don't like inside the waistband holsters
  • I think ankle holsters are a bad idea
  • I'm not wearing a man bag
  • I have to dress in business casual that means I can't go around with an untucked shirt etc.

So I've been seeing these advertisements for "concealed carry jackets" or coats. There's one variety made by sigarms and there are other manufacturers out there as well. Does anyone have one of these and how well do they work? Any recommendations? This might just be the solution to the concealed carry problems I've been having.

My buddy gave me a 5.11 Tactical jacket that has hidden pockets all through it. Check out 5.11 Tactical. They have a lot of stuff.

I know a few people with the 5.11 denim jackets - they're built plenty stout.
have you considered shoulder rig w/sportscoat?
the other option would be one of the "tactical t-shirts" with the elastic "pocket" built in under the arm for pistol on one side and spare mags on the other.

You can take any of your sports jackets/suit jackets and have your tailor put a gun guard (another piece of fabric) around your belt line area. That way you don't print as bad as without the extra fabric. This is something that most places offer. Men's Warehouse offers this for LEO. I would recommend that you wear the same rig when you go into a tailor for fitting.

I have one of the sigarms 3/4 length jackets and I love it!! I carry a kimber pro carry tle (w/ crimson trace) in the left concealed pocket all the time 24/7 everywhere I go in the fall-spring (carry inside the waistband in the summer) I have never once had someone even look at me suspiciously while carrying my 45 in it. I also modified the holster band on the right side so that i carry 2 magazines in the right side concealed pocket. While I love mine you do have to be willing to wear a 10lb coat around(which I am) so I am sure it is not for every one, but like I said, I love mine and wear it all the time everywhere. I would suggest the 3/4 length because it has an interior drawstring to keep the wind out and elastic in the wrist cuffs which makes it much better in the cold

I've seen the Sig jacket on there website. It looks nice. I have a Jos A. Bank twill jacket in dark brown that has a perfect pocket just inside the left breast with a vertically oriented zipper. My P229 SAS fits in there quite nicely. It also has a zip out liner for warmer weather. I think it was ~ $60 or $80. Much less than the Sig. Unfortunately I live in a state which all but refuses to issue any CCWs. Good luck. -DT

Have you ever considered a shoulder holster? It would mean keeping your jacket on all day but they hide well under one. What size gun do you wanna carry?

Thanks for all the information and thoughts everyone I really appreciate it.

Let me see...

About the day planner idea, I had actually thought of that one myself (great minds do think alike it seems) the only worry I have there is that in theory at least are stuff is subject to arbitrary search when we enter or leave the premises. I've never heard of that actually happening but it could. I don't think they would actually pat us down regardless.

Thanks to you guys I've been looking at the 5.11 website, there's some very interesting items there that may end up being the route I go. I can't help thinking a leather jacket would be better at not imprinting though.

The coronado jacket looks like just the ticket but yikes it's pricey. I do understand that you get what you pay for however, so I'm certainly not ruling it out.

I'm going to go look up the 3/4 length sig jacket I don't remember seeing it before.

I'm also going to look up this Joseph A Banks jacket thanks!

I don't typically actually wear a jacket all day, but having one hanging on the back of the door of my office is good. I don't think I would get away with a shoulder rig.

I purchased an XD-40 subcompact for concealed carry, my Colt 45 seems a bit hefty for that.

Thanks again everyone, I'm always open to other suggestions.

Triton,
I just went to the Jos. A Bank site and I guess they call it the micro-suede zip out bomber so it's not twill. It's also a little more expensive than I remembered. Sorry it's been a few years. I think it would be suitable for the XD-40 sc. The Sig jacket might have a more purpose oriented system though. This is really just a pocket which offers relatively easy access. You could certainly draw faster from a shoulder rig. I have one of those too. Let's hope the need for a quick draw never arises. If you get the Sig perhaps you could give us a review. -DT

can I ask why you don't like IWB carry?
Crossbreed makes a REALLY comfy leather/kydex hybrid for a reasonable price.

Man - I just looked at the Sigs again for the first time in a while. My memory must be going :o . I thought they were much more money. Maybe they've come down in price. Now I want one too. :p Anyhow, good luck with your search and let us know what you settle on. -D

Wearing a jacket all day would be a pain, but the vests look pretty cool. Not really a vest person myself, but depending on the work environment, they may be a good fit.

I have one of the Sig leather jackets. It works well. However I notice my HiPower prints slightly (there's a bit of a lump poking out the front) but nobody has ever looked at me funny. In fact, it's hardly noticeable if the jacket isn't zipped up. Overall, I like it.

I saw this guy at a gun show who had Jeans and Slacks that had handgun spots in them. They looked really nice and he was selling them at a decent price. I can't carry so they wouldn't be very usefull to me. But that would seem to be good for you if you don't like holsters or don't want to wear a jacket all day.

Lets hope you can wear pants all day :p

Thanks for the update, I went and looked at the site as well, but was having a hard time finding a twill jacket that fit the bill, thanks!
