Concealed fixed blade EDC?

What about pocket carry? I wear tight jeans every day but I can carry good-sized things in my pockets. A long object sits in my pocket at an angle and isn't a problem when I sit down. I've thought about a FB knife in my pocket and I think I can go to 6.5" overall length without a problem. A 3.5-3.75" handle is sufficient so that still leaves almost 3" available for blade. Now I need to find something that fits those limits. TOPS makes 3 or 4 that might work, all for under $100, such as the UTE.

+1

I often pocket carry a small fixed blade (for utility, not self defense). I use a leather hip pocket sheath from KSF, and its flat, wallet-like shape stays upright in either a front or rear pocket.

4 o'clock is where I carry my pistol. I'm hoping to carry the knife somewhere else. I don't think any of my current sheaths are IWB compatible... I might be able to rig up something with the Sting. I'll have to take a closer look at the Nimravus sheaths.

Thanks.

Sam

I cannot legally carry a firearm where I am currently working. I thought a fixed blade might be a reasonable substitute while I'm at work.

Now I'm confused. Could you clarify? Something isn't making sense.

maybe he cannot carry his pistol at work, so he is looking for a fixed blade to carry while he is at work? When not working, he can carry his pistol, but would also like to be able to carry the fixed blade.

thats how I understood it :D

You are absolutely correct sir. I cannot carry a firearm into City Hall, so I remove my firearm before going to work.

But you can carry a concealed dagger into City Hall? (If you can do that, why not conceal a firearm?)

Is this supposed to be a SD knife? An EDC knife?

Still a "disconnect."

I suspect they would frown upon me carrying a fixed blade. Louisiana knife laws make no distinction between daggers, dirks, single edged knives, bowies, folding knives, etc. The only knives that are specifically mentioned are switchblades and "rescue knives". The former are prohibited, the latter are restricted. I'm assuming that if I am discovered carrying a fixed blade knife, any legal repercussions would be less than if I were discovered carrying a handgun. The concealed handgun laws in Louisiana specifically forbid carrying a concealed handgun into City Hall, among other places.

Wait! I'm going to disconnect myself from this thread! Just realized suggesting a good knife to illegally conceal in a municipal building isn't a great idea.

Good luck in your search, though! Hope you find something you like.

Thank you...beginning to connect....

So, is this knife for SD purposes inside City Hall? Aren't City Halls typically full of LEOs? They seem kind of safe. Or is this for the period between being in City Hall and when you can get your gun that you can carry outside City Hall? Can you check your gun at the City Hall door, as it were?

If the knife is for EDC, I'd suggest getting a nice pocketknife....that might be less frowned upon.

You're welcome.

Yes, SD purposes. My vehicle is not too far away and current law specifically allows me to leave my gun in my vehicle unless parked in a restricted access parking lot, which this is not. There is no facility to check my gun at the door, either literally or figuratively. There are occasionally LEOs in City Hall, but not very often. PD, SO, and City Marshals are all in other buildings. There is an unarmed security guard near the cashier, but otherwise the place is wide open.

So far, my AFCK has not raised any eyebrows. I guess that's the better option anyway. More comfortable, easier to carry, easier to explain. Louisiana is a pretty knife friendly place, at least where I am. I've probably been over-analyzing, but I was thinking that a fixed blade would be faster to deploy, more suited to SD, and less fragile.

Mostly, I'm grumpy that I'm working somewhere that I can't be armed at work. Walking around without my handgun leaves me perpetually feeling like I've forgotten something. I've pretty much carried concealed every day for the last several years unless I was flying somewhere.

As far as I know, carrying a KNIFE in city hall is not illegal. Perhaps you can point out where I missed something in the law?

Didn't you say "I'm assuming that if I am discovered carrying a fixed blade knife, any legal repercussions would be less than if I were discovered carrying a handgun."?

If it's legal to carry a fixed blade in City Hall, why conceal it?

I think over-thinking may be the case! :) I can't imagine that a concealed fixed blade, strapped to your calf, is going to be faster to deploy than that AFCK in your pocket!

I can find nothing that says that it is illegal to carry a fixed blade knife in city hall. However, I have no desire to draw unwanted attention. I would conceal the knife, if I decided to carry one, for the same reasons I conceal my handguns:

1) Not everybody knows that it is legal to open carry
2) Some people will have adverse reactions to seeing someone openly carry a gun
3) There is no need to advertise the fact that I have a gun or exactly where it is

While I live in a gun/knife friendly area, I can also tell you that the letter of the law doesn't always mean much.

Openly carrying a firearm is not addressed by any law. It is generally accepted that any right not prohibited is granted. Please note that I am not a lawyer.

Keeping the above in mind... There was an incident a few years ago with someone open carrying in an outlet mall. The OC'er was minding his own business and in the process of checking out of a store when three deputies rush in the door and tackle him to the ground. They proceeded to haul him off to jail. The district attorney did not prosecute the gentleman because he did not break any laws. The DA went so far as to publicly announce that he was not prosecuting and why. The sheriff then made a statement to the effect of "I don't care if it's against the law or not, I'm going to arrest anyone I catch carrying a gun openly in my parish". This is, of course, paraphrased as I don't have the actual quote near to hand. The OCer sued and won... but I don't want to have to go through anything like that.

LOL Which was why I wanted to carry closer to my middle. I've pretty much given up on the idea, but thanks for the "food for thought".

Those pocket sheaths attached to the belt (I forget what they call that) seem to work for people. They seem pretty quick to deploy.

If it was me, I'd just buy myself a nice new folder (maybe a new Benchmade) and be done with it! :)

For what it's worth, you could also make sure you have a kydex sheath with good retention for the blade, then rig a MercHarness (tip up, carried vertically along your side under your shirt/coat. It's pretty discreet, and reasonably comfortable, and has the advantage of being in a place where any weight you might be carrying probably won't get in the way, at least comfort-wise. It is a crossdraw rig though, generally. But it might be something to look into.
