I am buying from an ebay member outside the auction. I have spoken with him for the past few days and he appears to be honest and trustworthy. He also has numerous positive feedbacks, but all of which are from buyer status. He has agreed to cancel the auction before the period expires. After the auction has been cancelled I am going to send my payment.

I have done this before and I was extremely disappointed. The past seller was not a man of his honor, but this one seems to be okay.

All I want to know is, what can I do to protect myself from being cheezed again?

about a person willing to cancel an auction before the agreed upon time. Hopefully he won't cancel your agreement if a better offer comes along. I know Ebay has the "Buy it now" feature that will end an auction. Just make sure all of your bases are covered so you don't end up "taking it" in the end.

If you buy on ebay you have ins. minus $25. If it is a high end piece it might be worth your while to have a middle man type service (I believe ebay offers one) hold both items and then send them on their way when both arrive.

Cancelling an auction before it expires is not honest.

The auction is an agreement to offer an item for sale to the highest bidder within an allotted time period. Cancelling the auction prematurely is not fair to those who have been or are planning to bid but haven't yet done so.

The only honest reason to cancel an auction is if the seller has determined that the item is not as described or something along those lines that would make the other bids "subject."

Why would he agree to cancel the auction anyway, thereby depriving himself of the opportunity to receive a higher bid?

This sounds like an unethical dealer, unless you're using the "buy it now" feature. It's been my experience that e-bay's mediation process, insurance, etc., are worthless. So if you decide to buy, use a good, major credit card; it WILL protect you against fraud.

He had claimed that he was no longer interested in selling, I made him an offer he couldn't refuse. He says that he was going to cancel the item anyway because there were some features that didn't match his description and borrowed pic. I'm glad I contacted him to ask about the condition before he had ended it. I am paying by money order and registered mail. Does this sound fishy? Am I going to get ripped off?

Um ... he was going to cancel the auction because he lost interest in selling, but you made him an offer he can't refuse ... so ... he's going to cancel the auction anyway? I'm confused. If that were true why wouldn't he just let you buy it at auction?

Ebay does make some (minimal) efforts to respond to fraud, and people they've kicked out for gross violations hang around Ebay emailing bidders offering to sell you the same thing for less. This sounds like another way of evading the minimal enforcement efforts Ebay makes ... it might be interesting to do a search and see how many other auctions he's posted and cancelled.

I could have placed a bid, but he wanted to cancel the auction because the features weren't accurate with the description and picture. Thus, portraying false information to the other bidders. After I offered him a decent price, he decided to sell it, even though he was no longer interested in selling that item, because I was still interested and he needed the money. He says that I won't be disappointed. I've searched his other sales and they look okay.

I'm going to have to trust this guy, I think it will be a smooth transaction.

If you are feeling so uneasy with this transaction you should not go through with it. You do not have any recourse if the transaction doesn't work out.

You should really listen to what you just stated above. I don't understand how anyone could be a man of honor if he is willing to circumvent the rules of the auction. If you are willing to participate in an attempt to fix an auction for your own benefit then don't be surprised if you end up holding another empty bag. Sheesh.

Trust Your Gut Feeling!!! If it don't feel right don't do it. Never spend anymore than you feel "comfortable" losing. If it sounds to good to be true....
And I always pay for anything of substantial value with a CC because of buyer protection. Most debit cards offer this protection as well, check with the card issuer. A Rule I go by on EBAY is that sooner or later another identical item will come along... GAURANTEED!! GOOD LUCK!! Let us know how it comes out!

I don't see what the problem is with someone cancelling an auction, if nobody has placed a bit yet...

If I see an item up for auction that I really want, and nobody has placed a bit yet, I might email the seller to see if they want to cancel the auction and sell to me for a set price.

Thanks for all the help guys. I went through with the order because I had a good feeling about this guy. He kept his promises and our transaction ended smoothly... A true man of his word!
