Hey all, I'm new to the sub forum (spend most of my time around the Beckerheads) and I'm looking for some guidance. I've recently been interested in tomahawks, and there's two that really interest me, the Condor combat axe, and the CS pipe hawk. I like the idea of full tang construction but I just haven't heard much about the Condor hawks and I want to make sure they are good quality. An if I get a CS hawk, what kind of things can I expect to have to do to ensure a tight fit between the head and shaft.

Thanks for reading and any advice you guys can offer!

I dont own a condor but I do have a pipe hawk. Mine came with a really tight fit on it so I didnt worry about that but you do have to sharpen it or else you would pretty much be throwing a butterknife on a handle. If you decide to take the head off you might also want to file down the edges of the eye or when your putting it back on it will scratch the handle. Hope it helps.

That's good to hear! Thank you, I like the idea of having the spike for various reasons. Thanks for your input.

The Condor is ok, but it's flat stock and the handle tapers in the wrong direction (in my opinion.) I like the Condor TRT better.

I'm not a big fan of full-tang 'hawk construction, but then I don't have one. :)

The flat stock ones are great if you want to use them as a thrower, but for actual use as a hawk I would not consider it a great option.

It's very nice for a budget 'hawk! Heavier than the Trail Hawk and with a larger hammer poll.

Good! I don't think I will mind the extra weight. I'm very excited to hopefully try it and if I really enjoy it I know I will upgrade. Haha.

I view the extra weight as a plus in this case. Makes it hit more like a tool and less like a weapon. :)

The pipe hawk looks like a real winner to me, all the cold steel hawks are great value, just pick the one that strikes your fancy. I own 3, frontier, spike, and the trail, and modding is a lot of fun. I will probably get a pipe hawk someday too. Not that the bowl is not hollow though, its just like a hammer head.

I like the wooden handled cold steel hawks, but if you throw them the handles tend to fall off. The eyes aren't really made correctly in my opinion, which is why they have a set screw in them.

If you want an actual tool I'd suggest a hatchet. The hawks are fun and everything, but they don't replace a hatchet.

I don't have a pipe hawk.

I do have a riflemans hawk, norse hawk, spike hawk, pole axe, bad axe, and special forces shovel from CS.

ALL have been thrown, and used hard.

The Rifleman hawk has been thrown for over a decade, They hold up great.

As others said, take a file (or sandpaper) to the inside of the eye to round the inner edges a bit. This will save wear and tear on your handles.

Before throwing, make sure you take the set screw out. You can split a handle in a single throw with it in if you miss hit.

I don't own the Condor. But would buy every single one of the CS hawks without hesitation based on all the ones I own. They are not perfect, or custom quality by any means, but the sure are a rugged value, and just plain fun!

The pipe hawk is on my short list.
