A thread was closed yesterday and a member was banned.....why??????

Because he lost his temper, and many of you goaded him on.

A question was asked, and apparently no one knew the answer.

So, what did they do....post useless comments and start a flame war.

The first reply was from someone who didn't know the answer...and probably not a clue about the steel in question, or the metallurgy involved.....but he must post or miss an opportunity to see his name in the thread. I have privately asked this person before to just read when he doesn't know the answer, but obviously that isn't what he wants....so he posts away.

The OP took some comments as being derogatory, and made a comment back.

Sure, he seemed a bit of an ass in his replies...but count the number of folks here, including me, who haven't been an ass at one time or another, especially when they think they are being poked at.

So, everyone started poking fun at him and goading him with the same comments that made him say what he said. WHY???????? Are you guys really that bored for something to do????

Then a super-mod was contacted, and gave a warning....that should have been the end of it.....but NOOOOOO.

Everyone starts cheering on the fight like a bunch of school kids at a playground fight. Childish at best, stupid at worst. Today, people get killed in what should have been nothing but an argument because of the gang effect caused by the gathered crowd.

I must say that I am a bit ashamed to be a mod when things like this happen.....and those who were posting should be ashamed of letting it happen.

The question was ,"where can I get 50100B or 0170-6 steel?"

That is a simple question....not an invitation to a fight.

If you don't know the answer....don't answer. If you get a useless answer to a question you ask....don't reply back!

That is a simple rule for keeping situations like this from happening. I sometimes wish the super-mods would start a zero tolerance policy, and ban both parties in an argument. That would either make things a lot more civil here...or very lonely for the survivors :)

The next time someone comments on another forum why they don't like Bladeforums ...remember this thread....that is what is giving us a bad rep

For the answer to the OP's question, 50100B was the steel Cold Steel sold as Carbon-V. Since they use whatever they can purchase at a good price, you don't really know that is what it was, but it is everyones best guess. 0170-6 is the same steel, just the manufacturers designation.

The current replacement for knife makers is Cru Forged-V, which is very similar, with more vanadium.
52100 is the equivalent steel of choice for others, with more chromium, but no vanadium. Both will forge a very fine grain knife if the procedures and HT are done right.

Your absolutely right. I have read a few threads talking about how people (mainly makers) seem to have a chip on there shoulder over here. I will say I havnt had any bad experiences. But at times you an definitely get the feeling of arrogance an entitlement with some of the members, you get that everywhere it just seems alittle more pronounced here at times.

After it's all said an done this forum is a wealth of info and I am sure glad it's around.

He got a viable lead on the 52100 from the first poster and then it really went down hill from there. That is the great thing about BF's you usually can get the correct answer sooner or later :)

We normally give quite a long leash to folks and enough rope to hang themselves if that is their intention.

Camden was given a "warning" (no points) by me privately through the bf system:

How about lightening up a bit on the attitude? You're the new guy here and you're going to our forum regulars asking for information. If you can't respond to them in a civil fashion perhaps this isn't the best place for you. Just sayin'.

His response to this was to report the "warning" as "spam" back to the moderator's section and then come back into the thread he had started to show how big his cojones were.

A forum "regular" with some time under his belt on the site would have been afforded more latitude. Camden didn't earn that respect. It's just that simple.

It's a two way street. Those who wish to participate on and learn from this site must learn to do so with a modicum of respect.

I know I for one am tired of pepole answering post that dont have a clue about what there talking about. Like posting what they think is the answer because they read it some where on the internet. This drives me nuts! If you dont know what your talking about keep your mouth shut period.

I don't think Stacy's post was so much about whether you will get an answer or not but the attitude of some of the participants.

We all need to remember that when we started we were all newbs. I won't name any names but I know of more than one big name maker that has walked away from this site due to just this kind of thing. One of them has helped me in the past and continues to help me on other sites but hasn't posted on this site in over a year or more because of this kind of nonsense.

Some one once made a comment when I first started visiting forums, before you hit enter stop and think is that the way you want some one to talk to you
!

There has been a few times when I knew I would be banned for what I was about to say and I had to go back and reword the point I was trying to make without lowering myself to level of the person that had posted there comments! Some days I look at some of the posts here and I just have to shake my head and tell my self to stay out of it, because I know some of the stuff that is being said is nothing helpful only derogatory!:(

I consider this to be one of the most informative sites out there but some of the folks need to get a grip when it comes to posting comments. This is about knives and related subject not your ego!

Another thing to remember is that there are real human beings on the other side of your screen. Behave here like you would in a real public place eg; at the knife show. You wouldn't want to behave like an idiot in real life infront of people, then don't act like one online at a site like this one.

Remain civil, respect others like you would expect them in return and there will be no problems.

Fwiw, Camden just tried to rejoin the forums as "camhunt" and was just banned again.

Had he responded to the "warning" with an email taking at least some responsibility for his actions I'd have had no problem with allowing him back on the site...But every time he attempts to sneak back on in this manner he will be banned.

Apparently it's much harder to admit any wrongdoing than it is to lash out at and blame others.

I can kinda see why the guy got pissed....lol. (could have ended up being a better sport about it though)

First response - I'm going to offer you a completely different steel than what you're asking about because I assume they are similar.

Second response - Go read the stickies that have nothing to do with your specialized question Noob. Dismissed.

The Forum is Shop TALK - Questions and answers. The guy didn't get alot of answers or talk.

I'm a fan of the stickies, but sometimes people need a specialized answer, or just crave some individual help and attention from a good knifemaker. That's what this place is for right?

He's back

Thank you.

I actually banned the account before getting to read the "apology" So, I have asked Camden to contact me privately via email. If we can get it resolved I will lift the ban on one of his accounts so he can continue to profit from his association with this site.

This whole exercise was never intended as a pissing contest to show anyone up and I'm not averse to restoring Camden's membership if he is sincere in his wish to return and participate in a respectful manner.

Hopefully, we can get this resolved. It will be up to the super-mods, but camden et-al is in contact with them.

I honestly dont normally post on threads like this but i fee like I have to share an opinion..Of course he was to blame but he was not the only one..I dont feel that just because you have been here a while or a valued member that it gives you an open invitation to be a jerk.(just my opnion). Why not just ignore someone being disrespectful instead of trying to one-up them and lower yourself to that level..
Fighting and argueing over a keyboard is usless at best..More than childish at worst..It reminds me so much of the thousands on inmates Ive dealt with over the years that were the baddest thing to ever bend a blade of grass until I popped that door and there wasnt two inches of steel between them and me..
i say just ignore, show that your better than that and move on..
Then if the offender is honestly sincere and comes with hat-in-hand then give him a chance to make things right..Wont cost a thing..

Camden has been reinstated. Thanks to all for sharing their thoughts.
