I think one of the fillet knives I have on the "For Sale" forum would work great! :D

I'm surprise no one has mentioned the NMFBM yet :-)

If your going to go that route an AK would work also. Hmm.... that gives me an idea for after the holiday. (Note to self tell the wife to get the kids pumpkins this year.)

go to a craft store and buy a pumpkin carving kit. Their about $10-15 and come with little saws, pumkin scoop, and carving patterns. I'll post the one that I did last year later, as I am at work now. Fat knives are fun, but thin saws work a heck of a lot better.

x2 on that one. I have carved with Busses for 2 years now, and while fun, not the best tool. I still use 'em for removing bigger chunks, but details are left for the uber thin stuff... Like the NMFBMs... :p

I carved last year's with an Active Duty 2007 SE.

But all you really need is an AK-47!!!

-1000000 on that post! :D

I have a couple kits, the point of this isnt necesarily to carve the best pumpkin, its to find new busses! I spend most of my time in Los Angeles, so any excuse to use a busse must not be missed!

Yeah, the knives are fun for punkin' carving but I cheat, an old thick ice pick to get a hole and slip in a 5" piece of coping saw blade for precision punkin' cutting. Doesn't involve a Busse but you can get some funky stuff done this way.

Well... we all know a Mora would do that (and most other knife chores...) better than anything mentioned so far (and please don't accuse me of being chauvinistic and all that jazz... ;-) ) but where's the fun in that...
I say stay contemporary and split that b*gger in halves with an ASH-1. Tell the kids it's the way you used to do it before all this fancy CAD carving came along. Some might frown and cry and stuff and call you an old fart, but some will adore you for reintroducing proper "old school" and write hiphopfloppetyflopp rhymes about you all night.

Another vote for the boxcutter. After years of trying all manner of cutlery, the lowly boxcutter does a splendid job with the venerable Cucurbita Pepo, much to the delight of the young ones. A slender Busse might suffice, but disregard anything in the fatty phylum for such refined work. The Skeleton Key would work if you just had to swear allegiance to the Wauseon ilk. I imagine some folks out there will try out their new NMBM for Halloween. Others will go for a SAK while thousands will grab for any old, semi-sharp kitchen knife hidden in some drawer in dire need of new rollers. Still, others may buy a gourd that is pre-cut.

With the economy sliding down into the mire, you can still snag 50 extra blades for the boxcutter and a coke without breaking the bank. Another nice option is the Rapala fishing blade of six inches. A word of caution though: they are razor sharp and could easily render a sunny day into a less favorable holiday.

For all around I might look to a Lean Mean Street - that one would cover all your needs for sure :)

No Busse content, but as promissed, results of last year's pumpkin carving. Pic 1 is me and little hlee carving pumpkins. Pic 2 is mrs hlee and little hlee carving, and pic 3 shows the results. Little saws beat knives for pumpkin carving. If you need a reason to buy a new knife try "I need a new knife because it is (insert day of the week here)."

Those are pretty cool! I think I am going to use one a shiva rex on one pumpkin for fun. If it doesn't work out that pumpkin gets turned into pie so it's really a win-win for me.
