I've been lurking BF for a while now and the recent Dick Prenoeke post ( and a few Bushmills) have inspired me to contribute. Alone in the Wilderness is argueably one of the best outdoor documentaries ever produced. That said I'd like to offer up a list of other books and movies I've found of similar genre and would expect the folks here in WSS would enjoy as well. Add your comments and additons to the list.

1. Alone in the Wilderness (movie) and the book One Man's Wilderness
2. Alaska: Silence and Solitude (movie)
3. The Frozen North (movie)
All of the above were made by Bob Swere Productions and they did a fabulous job with all of them. They have a number of other wildlife films I've yet to see but they are on my list...
4. Cache Lake Country - (book)
5. Indian Creek Chronicles- (book)
6. We Took to the Woods (book)
7. Dead River Rough Cut - (this is f'ing hilarious) - The life and philosophies of two Maine trappers. **must see** (movie)
8. The Final Frontiersman (about Hiemo Korth in Alaska) -(book)
9. Braving Alaska (Nat Geo Film from the 90's) - Great documentary on the realities of living in the bush and touches on Hiemo Korth and his families survival in the Alaskan frontier. (movie)
10. I will reluctantly add Into the Wild - a good example of what not to do.Too bad they botched the movie. (book / sucky movie)

Post #1 down, 999 to go and I'll give a way something cool, promise. I need a refill. Enjoy

Welcome to the forum ksquared, and thanks for the list of recommended viewing and reading. Many of these are new to me, and I look forward to checking them out at some point.

All the best,

Welcome aboard

Nice contribution for a first post :)

I would also recommend reading: Survival Wisdom and Know How

It has everything you'll ever want/need to know about surviving in the outdoors.
