I have been looking at the many 1-2" belt sander-grinders offerings-Kalamazoo, Burr King, Wilton, Jet,and cheap imports to name a few. Planned use- shaping knife handles and blades. The machines come in a very wide range of speeds -1,750 to a screaming 7,000 sfpm. Please give me some advice on your preference for speed, brand, and best belt size for use and grit availability- mid $400.00 is my limit ----thanks Steve

You might check out the Grizzly, I don't have one but from what I hear they are pretty good, and I think in the 400.00 price range, not sure, and you get a 2x72 inch grinder, with motor. hope this helps.

Save a few more dollars and get a Coote grinder with step pulleys and you can find a used motor. You will thank yourself later believe me. The Grizzly is good but you have no control of the speed. You can grow with the Coote and add things as you go.

I definately agree with that statement. You "CAN" make a knife without speed control, but it makes life so much easier. Slowing things down when handle shaping is a plus.

Thank-you for your suggestions- I have looked at the Grizzley as well and it is good to here from someone who has used a particular piece of equipment. I did stumble across the Coot:jerkit: but had forgotten that the different speeds would be an option with this machine-I will look at their site again--At first glance the machine looked tops for quality but because I was not familiar with it I worried that I would end up needing a whole lot more money for parts that I was not aware were needed. The option to add as I learn is a plus as well........Steve

I do have a motor from a Sears Craftsman table saw I believe it was 1 hp-would this be something that would be compatible with The Coot ?

I looked at the motor the rpm is 3450 which is fast--I believe you can increase speed with various pulleys but is speed reduction an option with the Coot pulley system ?----Steve
