What's your opinion of their usefulness. You don't hear much about them on the forum. I bought my first this week simply because it was one of the Rough Rider Bowies series I had been collecting and could get it at a reduced price of $10.00.

It depends on the blade configuration. It seems a lot of them are redundent, with two sheepsfoot mains and two pen secondaries. I guess that's okay if you're into that sort of thing, but I prefer the ones with more variety, like these:

I have this guy

And then the #62 courthouse whittler, kind of a hybrid of a whittler on a congress frame

I have two (a Case and a GEC) and I love both. I may not need 4 blades (and on days I carry it with another knife I realize I have 7 different blades on me at one time) but I love the pattern. I love the curve of the handle. True the GEC has two blades doubled but the fit and finish and the feeling of the knife in hand is great. The case has four different blades and I like variety.

I like them with a variety of blades too such as this one.

The Sheepsfoot blade is my favorite blade on a Congress knife and for my .02¢, the most useful in this pattern.

Case seems to have the most blade variety, though the 6 blade ones have all of them beat. I'm in the market for another Congress, I really like the pattern, I find them really pocket friendly and there is something about the historical aspect that gets me too.

By this time tomorrow a Boker Carver's Congress should be on its way to me.

Ed, that is one sweeeet knife
I just might have found my next quest...after unearthing a 60 some odd year old Boker at a flea market, I kind of gained an affection for the pattern...and that one you have there has some nice variety to its blades...

WOW, that Case is beautiful. I've never owned a "pocket knife" before. I think that may change shortly.:)

sitflyer, thats a neat ol' Boker...just what Vintage is that one my friend?...love the very nice interesting Bone and the old shield is something different!

Duncan, best I could gather was 1950's ish...
Modoc Ed, can you tell me the model # of that beautiful Case?

Sitflyer, flea markets are my new best friend, you get a lot of value for short money, plus it's loads of fun to seek out something. I've been going to a big outdoor flea market on and off for 7-8 years looking for musical instruments ( no luck ). Last year started to look for old knives with no luck, but this summer it's been paying off. I guess it's persistence I've been going every Sunday for two months and taken home 4 beauties for a total of $28 spent.
Good luck on your search.

Here is my Henckles carbon, like everyone else I like the multiple different blade choices.
I bought it to use as a whittler, but hasn't seen much time in my pocket since I got my peanut, and pen knives.

Wow... those Congresses you show off here are really great looking. I never thought much about that pattern... I own one by RR, but that´s it.

But it seems, I need to pay more attention to that pattern. :)

Kind regards
Andi

EDITED Post:

Well, I just wanted to show off my only Congress.

An orange smooth bone Congress. It just think, about 3,5" closed.

Kind regards (again)

I carry these two frequently though I prefer the half congress. The vast majority of the cutting I need done I can get by just fine with the sheepsfoot or wharncliffe blade. The fact that they're easy to sharpen is just icing on the cake.
