Hi all

I was wondering if anyone knew of any knife makers in or around central CT who wouldnt mind having a complete beginner (as in never having touched knife making) sit around and watch and pick their brain.

Ive recently thought that making some knives for myself would be an interesting hobby but wanted to see if there was anyone out there I could learn from.

Thanks for reading.

Im sure IG will chime in any second but he's the guy to visit in the area. New Bedford MA. You better like dogs, portagee food, and crotchety old men

Mace Vitale not only makes some fine knives, but also occasionally puts on a forging clinic at an art center somewhere around New Haven. I chuckled when you asked about central Connecticut. I lived in Manchester for a couple of years, and after living in Florida, it seemed to me that you could walk anywhere in Connecticut in about 6 hours.;)

And don't put anything on the ground because the dogs and their owner will "mark" it..... :( You also forgot "smelly." :p

IG's great and has a hammer in coming up in a couple of weeks.

How would you like to write home to your Mamma and tell her that a crotchety oldman kick your ass. HEHEHEHEHEHE!!!

I work in Waterbury, but live in Southbury. I am not as expert as some of these other guys :D

but I might be closer!

I'm probably going to start up in a couple weeks, so maybe we can figure something out to help you get started.

here's a little recent one

Bill

I would recommend Mace . makes a nice knife and is a great teacher. just dont get between him and his food.
Joe Szilaski just opened a HUGE shop in pine plains NY not to far from central CT. He intends to teach Knife Making, bladesmithing and the like on all levels. Joe is also a great guy and a great teacher. you can find him on the American Bladesmith Society website

I'm close to Middletown and do stock removal. Not real experiencced but I can show you how to make all the newbie mistakes very quickly. WARNING: BE VERY CAUTIOUS
MAKING KNIVES IS VERY ADDICTIVE AND THERE IS NO KNOWN CURE. YOU WILL SPEND LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY ON STEEL THAT YOU WILL USE TO CUT AND BURN YOURSELF. ARE YOU STILL HERE?.....NEVER MIND IT IS TOO LATE! WELCOME

Hey guys ...

thanks for all the responses. the HI intimidates me lol... I wouldnt know what the hell to do or say... maybe when I actually have at least swapped out scales or put together a kit.

Kevin and Bill.... that sounds cool- Id like to quickly learn the mistakes ill be making :) and actually scale removal/replacing or stuff like that is a good place for me to start..its probably what I would try first... I dont see forging in my near future.

Im an academic, and would like to do something with my hands over than write words on paper (that no one reads).

edit: Bill, thats pretty nice as far as I can tell! id be very happy if I could do that.

Still interested folks.. so if anyone is going to work and wouldnt mind someone *quietly* watching, please let me know.. and let me know your favorite beverage as well;) Thanks again.

I was cruising around the net looking for CT custom makers and came across this posting. I noticed you are close to Middletown. I'm in south Glastonbury. I bought a few knife blanks and want to try to make handles and possibly sheaths for them. Bought these about 5 years ago...lol and just can't jump in and buy the pieces necessary for the handle, mainly because I don't know what exactly to get. Would you be willing to give me a hand or point me in the right direction?
