There are probably thousands of different techniques for putting a finish on a blade. I too find it interesting what techniques people are using. I also experiment frequently to see what I can come up with. I currently offer two finishes on my knives; hand finished or machine finished. My current technique for machine finishing is to go from a Trizact A45 to a Scotch-brite 400 grit belt and then to a 1000 grit Scotch-brite. Even on my machine finished knives, I will hand finish the flats after the Scotch-brite because the belt has a tendency to cross over transition lines and put fine scratches where I don't want them.
I have a bench grinder set up with a pair of Scotch-brite wheels and it is awesome for a lot of purposes but, I would not use it for putting a finish on a blade. The contact area is too small and I would expect the finish to be inconsistent. That said, I've not tried it so perhaps it would work.
