Considering a Mini CQC-8 Horseman. Thoughts?

Hey everyone,

I've been a knife nut for years now, and have always seen Emerson knives, but they never really called to me. I have always recognized the quality, but never pulled the trigger. I love the philosophy behind them, the build quality, the fact that these are CLEARLY knives with a purpose. That said, I never really GOT them. Well, now I think its about time I figure it out, and no better way than to jump right in, right?

After some deliberation, I think the right one for me would be the Mini CQC-8 Horseman. I like the V grind, and blade shape. Also, the size looks very EDC-able for me. Any input? Should I consider another model first?

ALSO..... The ones I have handled new have been STIFF, to the point of being downright offputting. Any tips or tricks for breaking in your new pride and joy?

Thanks for your help!
(And apologies in advance if this is a tired old thread for some)

DO it. The Horseman is the only Emerson I have ended up keeping. It's size and blade shape is perfect for everyday use. I had Josh from razoredgeknives put a convex grind on it and it cuts like a dream. The thing about Emersons is the kinks somehow work themselves out. All the one's I had had blade centering issues and things of that sort, that simply worked it self out after using the knife. Lockup is solid and my Horseman opens lightning fast with no bladeplay once I found that sweet spot in the pivot and loctited it down. Plus the warranty is stellar. You won't be sorry with the horseman.

Great blade.... definitely go for it. I love mine as you can tell. If the pivot is a little stiff just back it off a bit and lube it till it breaks in, then you can snug it back up.

Nothing like a well loved Emerson

Awesome, thanks for the feedback, guys!

I had been wondering about a coated blade, but seeing the "love" you put into that one, DC, I may be a believer.

Of the Emersons that I own, I'd say that the Horseman has grown on me the most. I had the 8, but found it FAR too large to EDC. This one is just right - said Goldie Locks - and I have decent size mits. Between the deep choil and G10 that could stick to glass, I feel secure when using this blade, even with super sweaty hands in the summer. I love my CQC7 - and even though I would never make a foolish movement with the thing - I feel less 'secure' in a sense. Doesn't mean I wouldn't take it to the end of the earth, but that is a whole different story.

Moral of the story, grab one. You won't regret it for a second.

Coop7, the journeyman looks very interesting, but a bit big for EDC, IMHO. I think it looks like a solid heavy duty user, though.

Lycosa, yeah, I have checked that one out many times. Just a classic. That may win out.

Wait till you hold the 7 in the foil grip. Wrap your ring finger right below the pommel.

The Horseman was my first Emerson. Not a bad knife, I like it, I just wish I had gotten the fullsize 8. I can still hold and manipulate the mini but I think the fullsize is better suited for my big hands.

The 7 is a classic, IMO. But tastes differ.

the horseman would be a great edc knife personaly i have the full sized cqc-8 and prefer the size but it is a big knife if i need something on a smaller size i like my cqc-7 the trick to getting the knife to loosen up for me i take mine appart and get the grease off the pivot area and putting my own oil on it and they are both buttery smooth

Kappi011, what oil do you like to replace the stock grease with?

And wow, lots of love for the cqc 7!

fwiw, If the nylon washers are clean, all you need is a drop of light weight oil every now and then. The nylon washers are self lubricating.

As far as the stiffness goes, most people take them apart, clean them, and relube. If you afraid to do that you can just put some CLP around the pivot and keep working the blade. Each time you rotate the blade wipe off the excess CLP and a lot of the old grease and what not will come off too. It worked great for a new Super Commander I just got. Was very stiff, now super smooth.:D

honestly i just use motor oil in a little bottle... idk if its the best but it works great for me

Just got one...something bout that blade shape and the ergos...real sick. Think i might pick up a regular size CQC8.

Just got one as well and love it, like it's made for being used with gloves which I need. Keeper. Unfortunately gonna let the cqc-7v I just got go on the chopping block, not so good for gloves but quality knife in every other way it seems.

Love my horseman. Perfect size and very comfortable. As far as Emerson's go price wise, It is on the lower end of the scale.

The one thing about the Horseman that really intrigues me is...How did they manage to build a knife that fits my hand perfectly?
Honestly., it's like it was built just for me.
Cheers
