Considering a new Emerson for under the tree. I've been kind of looking at the Roadhouse. Any thoughts? Is $165 a good price? My other option is a Sheepdog Bowie - $215.

I have the privilege of owning all 3 sizes of the roadhouse and for the standard version that is a good price as long as it is in good condition with a box. I like the design of the roadhouse in general and it is a great all round utility blade and just cuts through anything and everything. I also really like the grip because it feels like it just fits in my hand and it is not going anywhere. That would be a great gift under the tree and you cannot go wrong with it.

I also own the sheepdog but the spear model and I really like it because it is really smooth in opening and closing. Just my preference though if it is my first and possibly my only one I would still choose the roadhouse. It is a big enough blade to cut anything and I feel the grip is better for outdoor uses and even with sweaty or wet hands it definitely won't slip because of the large choil. if you have enough money for both get both but my opinion sticks with the roadhouse and if possible look at the super roadhouse

I'm kind of leaning towards the sheepdog because of the flipper and bearing pivot. I have a CQC7 and I find it quite stiff. The prices I have listed are brand new from a retailer.

I love the Roadhouse but I view it as a fighting knife, but today, anything goes. :D
Have you considered a Commander? I EDC one as my all-purpose folder.

I have to say man that the thread seems suspect to me. I have over 14 emersons and one is a sheepdog. The detent is strong and has to have some force to open but not a ton. I have zero doubt if that guy aproached EKI to have them look at it they would have. I am assuming here but he most likley told them it was bad and wanted a return not that there could be an issue and if they could review the knife. If they did and found an issue history shows they would take care of him free of charge.

Not that i am advocating the sheepdog i have both the sheepdog and three roadhouses and i dig them completely. So eitherway you go youll be happy.

Hey just a thought...if you plan on getting more than one emerson in the future i would grab the sheepdog they may or may not be around long. The roadhouse is a staple of the emerson line so you can get one for sure in the future. Again just a thought!

Between the two you ask of I would get the sheep dog . The bowie sheep dog. Sweet knife.
After that the Appalachian which also has a limited run.
The Appalachian would be more of an EDC for me. I like the simple design. Although having the finger guard of a flipper sounds nice. They just are not my thing usually and I sell them.

Of the regular models the 13 is my baby. The roadhouse is very comfy too.

Looks like you have too many options at the moment.

What are your thoughts now?

I like the flipper/finger guard concept. I have quite a few flippers and I really like the opening option. I also love bowie blades (which explains my Hinderer bowie). Part of my decision is emotional as well. I absolutely love dogs and always have at least two collie/shepherds. For that reason, I like the sheepdog. I also like the smoothness of bearing pivots. It really wouldn't be much of a question if I hadn't read that one thread. I've contacted the retailed that I usually buy through and they agreed that if I don't like the knife after a couple of weeks (no cutting of course) that I could return it for a full refund. I guess I really can't go wrong.

Yeah. No doubt the Sheepdog will fit that bill. If you can swing the purchase now I would get it. There really are no flippers besides that I would care to own.
Plus the bowie version is amazing looking.
I edited the appalachian link above if you have not seen it.

Ok. Decision made. I just ordered the sheepdog bowie satin, with an Emerson skull bead, of course. :)

Of course.
I have a nice black pirate clip coming and the blue TI disk for xmas.
Thats all I asked for with a slab of titanium lol.
My wife said I suck at picking things out so she will do it her self.

I'd like to get a pirate clip as well. I was looking at them today. Direct from Emerson they want $42 just for shipping. I haven't really looked for them elsewhere yet. Any suggestions?

Roadhouse is a cool looking knife.
