Considering a passaround.

Yesterday John and I discussed a heavy duty skinner that I'd like. It will be roughly 13 1/2 inches overall with a roughly 8 1/4 inch blade of 3/16 O-1. The design is sort of a cross between a Randall 3 and a Randall 4 and it will have Ebony scales. It is on John's November list of things to do.
I'm hoping to use it when I finally get off the road and back to living like a human being. My dream is a Moose hunt and I have a large herd of Elk that hang out across the river from me.
If you think you'd like to try it, especially if you'll be doing some hunting and can test it's skinning capabilities we may do a passaround.
Let me know what you think.

I'd like to participate, I'm not a hunter but I camp and like and could do some testing about general use, sounds like a great knife. No offense taken if I'm not in, of course, I know I haven't been around here long and I'm not going to be able to test it as a hunter.

Stick around, get to know us and we'll see what happens.

I would be up for trying it, and definitely would at least like to see the design. Last year I used my Ky Woodsman, from field dressing to the freezer and was very pleased with it.

Our deer rifle season is the 12th - 21st not sure how much of it I'll get to hunt but I know dad will be out. He will probably shoot the first deer he sees, as long as the weather is cool enough for him. If not we have a week long muzzle loader season the middle of Dec.

Hi Mac -

I would be in, but all I would "skin" would be a nice tenderloin roll, but I promise I would do that and take pictures!

It sounds like there should be enough interest. Let's see where this takes us.

sounds good - any chance you coupld post up a sketch of the knife?
I may be interested in a passaround, too. (our whitetail season is 11/30-12/11)

This is the box that I cut the cutout from. John will do his magic from this. Just in front of the handle there should be a slight hump for thumb control that didn't come out in the cutout.
This will be a large knife. Hopefully I didn't screw up with the design, I know John will do his part.

The inspiration came from these two.

you going to go with a "dull swedge" on the spine like a BK5 to help limit drag when making deep slices in meat?

Cool Mack!

In that piece of cardboard lies a new JK waiting to be born. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Sounds like a great idea. The early Randalls were very smooth with a rounded spine. I'll see how John wants to do it.

You and me both.:D

good to hear.
took my JK big bushcrafter camping this weekend -- couple of the guys liked it a lot, commented on the square spine for throwing sparks and how comfortable the handles were.

I'm getting really antsy about this one.:D

John. I've been thinking about this a lot. I was just looking at the Knatchet and really like the way you rounded the forward part of the spine. Would it be a lot of extra work to round the spine on this one?
This is what I'm talking about.

Can you possibly be any better to deal with? Geez, you need to teach others what customer service looks like.:D
