Considering my first Benchmade

Hello gentleman, I'm considering purchasing a Benchmade Greg Thompson 4.47 inch blade in D2 Steel. I've never owned a Benchmade so this would be my first. Does anybody have this particular model? And if you do what do you think about it? I'd like to have a little more opinions before I drop the hammer on it. I've heard nothing but good things about Benchmade. Any opinions?

I’ve owned and used many BM through the years (autos, balisongs, grips, and custom shop etc.) and have had very few issues overall…their blade grinds and initial sharpening could be better for example, but overall a good American manufacturer imo. I don’t have experience with that model you’re looking at though.

I have a few Mel Pardue- 2 manual and one auto - spear points & a Sentinel - I think the spear point design is really good looking. It doesn't do much in the real world of cutting, but, it looks good while it does it
:D

Mine all date from the ATS34 is king of the steel pile era

Sounds like you're talking about the 391BK SOCP Folder. It's a decent knife...not the best slicer though. The MAP is high for D2, and mine has fairly poor blade centering that I could probably fix if I wanted to bother with disassembling it. I don't regret buying it, but there are better USA-made knives in the same size and price range, like the Spyderco Native Chief.

You don't say I'm going to have to look into that thank you very much

I've been highly satisfied with most of my Benchmades -- Mini-Rukus (S30V), 710 (D2), a couple of Grippies, Puukko 200 in 3V. FWIW, Benchmade's S30V and D2 seem finer grained than the same steels from other makers. The only one I don't care for is my Grippie in 154CM; maybe it's the fairly thick grind, as my other Grippie in D2 has a slightly thinner blade and higher grind that slices a lot better. The Axis lock is still outstanding.

Knock off the political B.S. before warnings are handed out. Read the rules and follow them...it's getting old reminding folks of this constantly.

Now you have no excuse.

Buy before they discontinue! I hesitated for so long on a benchmade because i didnt trust the axis lock, i was more of a fan of their balisongs which unfortunately i couldn't afford it back then and it was discontinued. I waited so long they discontinued the 707 sequel and i had to search for it on the secondary market. Its a good edc, took awhile to find a back up mint one.

I personally dislike Benchmade's and own zero. Greatly prefer Spyderco and ZT both quality and design wise. But to each their own. However, I have an axe to grind with them which the above political stuff has a small part to do with.

I had a Nim Cub II and it was really nice, very good quality. It didn't fit my preferred aesthetic so I sold it. If they come up with another design that I like then I will be more than happy to buy it. Wish they had a manual Pardue/stamulus with a sub 3'' blade.

I own a number of Benchmades, well made, affordable knives made here, no issues with any of mine

I have no experience with the Thompson designs, but the handful of BMs that I do own have been quite good in all the ways that matter to most people.. solid fit&finish/even blade grinds/good lockup/centering/etc.. Not all BM designs appeal to me, but as a company, they are solid, imo.. for whatever that's worth to you Vlade. Good luck with your first Benchmade!

Yeah I'm going to order it. It looks cool anyway. I'll let you know how I like it when I get it. Thanks everybody for the input
