Constantly searching

there was another custom single blade with carbon fiber scales that i saw that would be perfect, even with a cheap scale material mass produced, like a delrin. i'd still love that, it's a great pattern.

This one?

(If it is, I admire your taste. ;))

That's it precisely.

And i can't see myself affording something like that in the foreseeable future.

If a company would make a pattern like that with cheaper materials, say 154cm/1095/440c and delrin/nameless black plastic scales- all for around $25-30 ish I'd have one, and carry it.

I don't think my buddy Jerry would mind having a company building production versions of some of his knives (if they did the right thing by him).

We've actually discussed that scenario in the past and it was actually a bit closer than you might imagine.
(More like a high end mid-tech line than a low dollar version like you might get elsewhere. I was not involved except as a sounding board for Jerry.)

You might be able to get one of our forum members who enjoys modifying sodbusters to consider taking on a project (but that would need to be explored privately).

i considered trying to find a modified sod-buster, but i can't find a base to start at that i fully like, and the logistics seem like a headache.

I'd pay $45 for a lower-line version of that right there. it's nice.

I aught to get a slipjoint at some point... still haven't got one. too many patterns none which really hit that spot at that price-point.

Dnullify,

You might want to try some of the imports (Rough Rider, Steel Warrior, Colt etc) and for a few dollars try out a few patterns until you find one that really "speaks" to you.

If Buck can make their Vantage Pro one-hand opener in G10 and S30V, in America, to sell for around $50-$60, then they should have no trouble making a version of the above Halfrich knife to sell for less, say your $45 price point. It would use less steel, could even be a less expensive steel, and have a simple slipjoint spring instead of a linerlock. I just don't think the manufacturers believe they would sell enough of them to make it worthwhile (not "tacticool" enough).

Well I am still in trouble. Last night I picked up a Fiddleback MUK to begin making my Trio and today I bought said Stag Trapper. Here are some pics of the stag I dreamed about the other night. $50 cause it didn't have a box. Thought it was a pretty fair price.

Wow are the blades long on this bad boy. May or may not be making it into the rotation. Not sure yet. Hope I didn't waste any money.

Ok so the trapper has made it a week and I enjoy carrying it. Now for the fun part. I need a little help choosing a few of my next patterns to try. Here is a list of the ones I want to try:
humpback stockman
seahorse whittler
peanut
#25 GEC with the sheepsfoot blade
Barlow

What is this consensus? What to get next? With all this talk about the Dan Burke Barlow I am thinking I may need one. I have already made up my mind on the peanut. I found one with red bone scales and a cross shield. The GEC is chosen. So how about the Seahorse. Is it worth trying or should I try another pattern? The humpback stockman should be CV but I can't find one, so it will probably be a harvest orange pocket worn.

Now over the the carrying traditional for a month thread for an update.

I just got a #25 today from a forum member today and I could not be more pleased with it. It is as close to perfect as I have seen in a production knife.

I have a Seahorse that I rescued from the flea market. It is a very unique looking knife. I like it very much.

I'm getting closer to find the knife. I've come to conclusion that I need two knives: One serious work horse and other more... refined, something to use peel an apple and eat it. So far strongly seems that Queen small Dan Burke barlow is my choice of the work horse... Its my first knife after victorinox alox soldier that I've ordered 2nd speciment.

I love canoes too but something really speaks to me in that Barlow with heavy duty main spear blade and small secondary wharncliffe blade. Its hefty (not too much), its beautiful, its like tank. It has very stiff back springs not being nail breakers or benders like Queen Country Cousin.

I've got a Kissing Crane stag trapper that has scales like that. For the price it is a functional knife but far from collectible.

i still haven't decided on a slipjoint within budget... i guess i keep hoping that one will mystically pop into existence, made by a reputable company... it's just not going to happen, is it?

Totally agree with everybody,i have change my leatherman klamath(yeah i use it as my EDC) for a victorinox solo(with red scales) crazy huh......

OK I am jumping. I am going to order the Dan Burke Barlow and an EZ but I have a question. I have found two I like. Burnt Orange Tidioute or Green Smooth Bone from Bulldog. Both are GEC but what do you think?

You know, going back to the "Constantly searching" aspect of this thread, I have come to a realization. As a knife nut, it is next to impossible for me to choose one knife, or one pattern to be my be all and end all.
What I HAVE been able to do, however, is know what size I like (Small, Peanut sized knives). Specially now that I have an office job, a smaller knife works for me. Granted, I've carried my small knives out in the field as well, but now more then ever it seems really appropriate.
Peanut.
Pen.
Small Stockman.
Vic Classic.
These are the ones I carry the most. My Vic Cadet feels really big in my hand when I carry it now, and my Soddie Junior is a sword. LOL.
We all come to different conclusions, I guess, but that is mine. I have only been able to go as far as narrowing what size works for me. Small knives have never let me down, from really big chores, to small mundane everyday activities.

GEC Burnt Orange is really, really nice, I'd take it over the smooth green bone any day.
