Yo, Hollowdweller... I'm from up next to Fairmont, my youngest daughter and her husband are still there, and my oldest son is in the process of moving from Elkins to Morgantown. He's a SFC in the active West Virginia Guard. That makes us practically kinfolk ;) :D

That's how I feel when I write a reply I think sounds really good and then keep checking for feedback...it makes me wonder what I've done to get on peoples' ignore lists. (No, this isn't a desperate plea for chicklets--I'm just empathising with munk)

I wondered for awhile myself, then went the opposite way and got proud of my near-800 posts with only one chicklet. That has to be a record, takes skill to be that mundane and unnoteworthy. They Yvsa had to put me over, so now I'm just some schmoe with two chicklets. Dammit!! :o :p

The Devil's Advocate sez, "They're too busy making knives right now."

I'm experiencing a bit of an equipment failure myself right now in the form of a Tech Force 99 Magnum air rifle. I took it (and a few other items) to the firing line yesterday for some wringing out and sighting in. The damnable thing diesels worse than my Volkswagen does. I put probably two hundred rounds through it - nothing to laugh at with a full size springer - and it still belches smoke and sounds like a rimfire, and tosses groups that can barely be called gatherings. (I can honestly say that the Mossberg riot guns we have pattern better than this thing does.) Minute-of-printer-paper at 25 yards, when the wind dies down. And that's with the Beeman pellets.

Was I expecting better? Yes. It was advertised as better. The bore needs to be seen to be believed. (In a bad way.) But, I won't know how good or bad it actually shoots until it's done dieseling, it won't be done dieseling until all the excess oil's out of the innards, and who knows how long that will take. I did some reading on it and found out that I'm not the only one who's experienced this; at the same time, I found out that the breech can close on its own if it gets the mind to do so, removing any fingers involved in the loading procedure in the process. A non-shooting digit dicer. This is not what I signed up for.

Oh, well. It will make an interesting project if nothing else. I'll get it sorted out eventually.

But the belt sander? It's still chugging along, as is the Volkswagen. You win some, you lose some. :)

Wish I'd seen your post earlier. I have an old Rockwell 1 x 42 that I bought against the advice of Ralph Bone because I couldn't afford a "real" knifemakers belt sander. I've never tried to make a blade on it, but it does ok shaping butt caps and handles. There are a lot more options now than back then, maybe you can find something you like that isn't too outrageous. I can say that the rubber contact wheel and a solid backing plate make a huge difference.

Here's my favorite place for power tools.

I have a 1X42 Delta belt and will have a 4X36 Tradesman Belt soon.
For 229 bucks total that's a lot of versatility. Seems in my wanderings I saw one machine that took either a 1" or 2" belt, starting around that price somewhere, but most of my work is in wood, and I think getting two machines was a good deal for me. Sure, I saw Grizzly machines and Kalamazoo and some others at 300 and beyond, and no doubt those are more powerful, serious machines. But I doubt I'll wear out either of mine in my lifetime, and if I do, I'll know it's time to move up to a higher range.
Besides, it gives me two sanding disks and two belts sizes, all can be with different grits. That's versatile.

(you know what I just realized? I spent money for an SKS from a friend who needed the bread, and now these machines; I could have bought the Ruger 480 I keep trying to get....)

Been to Fairmont many times. I went to college in Glenville if you know where that is. Used to visit Morgantown all the time too. Been to Elkins many, many times. Elkins has one of the best natural foods stores in WV and of course right outside Elkins is the south end of the Otter Creek Wilderness. South end of Mylius, Otter Creek, and Shaver's Mountain trails are right there in Alpena if you know where that is.

the HF motor label was loose all around the edges
slapped on quick

? is it even an accurate label?

easy to slap in any motor of similar enough dimensions
depending on what's on hand or what's requested
by the reseller.

I was surprised how small the unit is.
Handy & light-enough to carry around freely.

HF charges $9 for a two year all-inclusive warranty on this.
I usually don't buy warranties, but ..............

My understanding is that HP ratings on motors are are notoriously overstated. It seems that standard procedure is to figure out a way to get the motor to draw the max # of amps, locking it up, overloading it or whatever. Measure the power drawn, translate to horsepower, and print a label. Normal use will never draw that much, nor will you be able to deliver that power.

You *might* be able to use those ratings to compare motors, or compare within a brand, but who knows.

They'd have to be measured the same way. TheTradesman says it has 3/4 hp. I don't believe that. It's 4.5 amp and the Delta is 4 and rated at 1/3 hp.

I'm just sending this back to the store. A neighbor will make the swap for me Thursday.

I guess I should have mentioned that I bought my belt sander without a motor and then bought a 1/2 horse rebuilt motor from sears. Some Sears stores, (usually one in each big city), have an outlet that sells reconditioned tools and stuff. I picked up a set of pillow blocks, a line shaft and a set of pulleys at the same time and bolted it all to a piece of plywood. I won't say how much I paid because it was over 25 years ago, so it wouldn't mean anything in todays dollars, but on the income of a starving/married/student/painter I could afford it back then. (Our budget for food was $15.00 a week.)

Since the shaft has two ends, I put a buffer on the other end later.

The New Tradesman appears to be fine. I ran it and the motor never heated. The machine never quit, either. The plastic parts might fit better on this one, and where the arm hits the deck misses the platform by 1/2", but no matter.

It goes round and round.

That variable speed is going to come in handy too. Now I have some machines I feel like a ...factory.
