Contact info for preparedness ideas?

if the shit hits the fan for real, salvaging and scavenging are likely to be a better option that hoping you've stashed a pack nearby. I'm not saying having some items with you isnt a good idea. But for basic things that are really all over the place...pack a brick and a prybar.

And the bureaucrats at "ready.gov" still can't bring themselves to put "utility knife" on the list. Unless I missed it. How ludicrous.

Maybe it has been discussed here before, but I wonder if it is a good idea to have a contact list or plan should there be a major US disaster, economic or otherwise. We are discussing the SHTF stuff here, and obviously most of us consider ourselves survivors. Ultimately aside from yourself, the best resource we have would be like minded individuals to be a support structure. I can pile up supplies and other stuff, but in a long term event having good people to call upon might be invaluble.

My question is have the people here considered a master list of contact info, or plans where people could meet up should a major disastor occur. I can see problems with this, but am interested in discussion.
Thanks

Whatever contact list I had would be isolated to local folks only and mostly family to be honest with you. In the actual event the SHTF it is likely any help further out than local would be little help to you and more likely than help just a distraction from actual things you could be doing to survive and insure the survival of your own to deal with local concerns since highways, overpasses, and perhaps even electricity, goods and supplies you don't have or ended up needing from unforeseen events would be limited if not unavailable at least in some areas of the country if not more wide spread if say the SHTF event was Yellowstone erupting or a tactical weapon of mass destruction that shut down trucking and other things causing widespread panic.

Sad as it may be to deal with in most real situations of such an event I think it would end up being pretty much every man for himself to a large extent and distrust would be very rampant among people, and yes even those among your contact list. History proves out that the battle between the haves and have nots is usually what takes place in these mega events so the last thing you want to do is advertise your preparations should you actually have any. At least thats my opinion. In such an event the only people you could trust fully would be your own family based on input from friends of mine that lived through Katrina where neighbors they lived beside for years were among some of the worst offenders for crimes against other neighbors even going so far as to steal their boats from out of their driveways trying to leave the area with them among other things and running off with them securing themselves and leaving the owners of the things they took to fend for themselves.

Living in Oklahoma tornado alley I've seen some of the things people do after a big catastrophe and unfortunately in many situations there is a reason the national guard has to be called out because these things bring out the worst in some, and sure no doubt there is the other side of the coin where real heroes and genuine good deeds take place in these type of events but you have to be realistic and see both sides.

You may not agree with it but my advise is this. Secure yourselves best you can with goods and things you need in the event of an emergency and even getting those things should be done with little attention drawn to yourself. Believe me there are folks that would remember, probably right there in your own neighborhoods and think to themselves when they run out of supplies how many trips and bags of groceries and packages arrived at your doorsteps and if you think I'm kidding talk to some of the folks that lived through some natural events of such a magnitude that caused relocations, deaths, and loss of everything leaving others that survived or that prepared better to see the worst side of their neighbors when things got tough.

Generally speaking there are foul weather friends and fair weather friends. One of the first things you need to do before making any list is discern if the people on it are foul or fair and go from there. Family is usually more likely to stick together even in bad times. Friends as close as family after that. Anything else is unnecessary risk. Just my .02 worth on this subject.

What if the internet breaks as a result of the shite hitting the fan, how would we access the plan

For our family we've come up w/ a plan on somewhere to meet should we be forced to leave home. Whoever is home grabs what is needed and we go to our "spot" and wait for the other. I'm sure others could be worked into it by just telling them where we're meeting and making sure they bring their own supplies also. But that's only in the event that you're forced from your home. Having 3 small kids I'd MUCH rather be able to stay in my home and open it to others if need be.

I don't ever plan on staying home for a hurricane ....I have riden out a few, but after the last one put the Gulf of mexico a block from my home when it is normally 14 miles away....hhhhmmmm.....nothanks I am evac..but this is why i have a evac kit already ready to go.....

I noticed that too, but held my tongue because I figured with our group, it goes without saying.

Yea, I added a knife or 20 to the list right after I added some 'double barrel looter repellent'.

More seriously, I know 9mm, .22, and 12 gauge are still the most common respective rounds to keep weapons for. But with the current ammo shortages floating around, what's everyone keeping around, or are rifles sliding out of vogue for the lower likelyhood of coming across ammo?
