Contact wheel isn't round

Hi Everyone,

I have a grizzly 2x72. When I put it together, the contact wheel wasn't round enough to grind on it, but it didn't bother me because I don't do hollow grinds. If I wanted to start using the contact wheel, is there a way I can round it out myself?
Thanks,
Chris

Thats strange.. Not sure if you would want to even try such a thing. Is it new and maybe you could return it. Or at least have them seny you another one.

Yes you can round it out. It might improve the balance too.

You will need to exercise proper caution, but, using my tool arm on my GIB as a rest I reached around the wheel and came from behind with a file. I have a VFD so I turned the speed down to 10% at first and used a 1" belt split from a 2"x72" to see the wheel edges better. I brought the file sideways like draw filing until my wheel was round and square.

I posted pictures of me doing this around a year ago with a cheaper budget 8" contact wheel.

That's likely the easiest way. Just be safe!!

Thanks! I'll see if I can make that work.

Marko3: I've had it for a while, so returning it at this point isn't an option.

Angle grinder running almost perpendicular to the wheel but still spinning it.
With caution it will be true and pretty much balanced both.
Ken.

You can turn it just like using a wood lathe. Put your tool rest as close to the wheel as possible at the widest point. Hold a piece of metal like a chisel firmly and "dress" the wheel down until it is round. Take small cuts and be careful.
