I am still collecting parts for my grinder. I have 240v in my garage now and have some of the parts for the frame. I was spending a lot of time thinking about the platten assembly, and i just realized that i am not sure it is actually necessary.
I have a 9" disk grinder with 3/4 hp motor that i flatten stuff with. For profiling, basically any contact wheel profiling any thickness knife blank will see less than 0.001" deviation across the profile due to wheel curvature. Typically, the deviation is 0.0001" to 0.0002", assuming the workrest is positioned well.
So if i can flatten scales and whatnot on the disk, shape handles on slack belt, profile on the wheel, and bevel on the wheel, why do i need a platten?
