Contact Wheels for KMG

Hey Guys & Gals,

I'm really new to bladesmithing. I'm still in the process of
setting up my shop. I've been forging some blades to shape
from leaf springs. I did as many advised on the bladesmithing
forums, and saved up my money and bought a KMG with the
platen. Now I want to start buying contact wheels for making
blades. With the high prices Beaumont charges for their contact
wheels ($65 to $415) I want to make sure I only get wheels that I'll
actually use for blade work. What size contact wheels do you use
and what do you use them for? Which do you use the most? And
are there any other options for contact wheels out there for my KMG?

As always thanks for all help and advice.

Take care!

Joe

All of them lol, I use 2", 1.5", 1/2" and 3/8" for small wheel atachment. I also use my 12" wheel for knocking off scale and some rough grinding, but a 10" or 8" would work just as good for that. Kinda just depends on what kind of blade your making.

You'll eventually want them all. i started with an 8" wheel, and then a 6" and a 5" etc. i mainly grind my bevels with 2" and 3" wheels now. but it's good to have all of them :) a good general purpose wheel is a 6" or 8" (imo).

When I was facing the same decision, the input I got was an 8" or 10" would be best to start with, as they have pretty good versatility. Preference would depend on type of knives you're wanting to make.
