The Bader III comes standard with an 8x2 serrated contact wheel. What are advantages/disadvantages of plain face v. serrated face contact wheel? I make 20-25 stock removal knives per year as a hobby.
Seems like most everyone I speak to has a dislike for serrated wheels. I have not used one myself, so I can't speak from experience, but I would stay away from them.
Contact wheels with serrations run cooler and do not wear as fast as plain wheels.
Straight serrations can cause chatter if you do not hold the blade tight against the wheel when grinding with finer belts.
"V" shapped serrations avoid the chatter problem and handle fine grits better but they are more expensive to get. You probably could not get them from the machine manufacturer. I have my contact wheel recoverer cut the v serrations as part of wheel refurbishing.
Soft wheels (50 Shore A) work well with the fine belts but wear quicker than the harder Shore 90 that I prefer for coarse grits and stock removal.
I get the wheels recovered by a local company called Clarke Roller. They will recover in any rubber compound and hardness you desire and groove it to your specifications. Usual delivery is about 2-3 weeks.
