This will be my first Benchmade. I have it narrowed down to these two. The other knives in my collection are Spyderco. I've got various models and blade shapes and all of them are carried at some point. My favorite knife was a CRK Umnumzaan, but I couldn't bring myself to use it given the cost.
This will be in the rotation and used for everything from a work knife (I work in LE) to opening packages, camping, food prep, etc...
I know there is no right answer I would just like to hear opinions from Benchmade users. I like the blade shape, blade size, and appearence of both.
I'm going to be choosing one when my wife and I go on our Christmas vacation as a momento like I do with all of my knives.

I was deciding between the Contego and the Rift,, I chose the Rift because its size was a little more EDC friendly,,, but for what you need I would totally go with the Contego. Better steel.. larger size will help with with camp chores..

for this kind of use, definitely the Contego. However, I wouldn't go with the regular Contego. I had one and sold it so I could get the stainless version of it from Knifeworks, the 810-1401 with M390 steel instead of CPM-M4.

anybody have picks of a Contego next to a Stryker??

As beastly and cool as the Contego is, I rarely carry it. One or another 909 has been in my pocket 6 of the months since it came out this year. Stryker is ideal and the handle is a better fit than the Rift for me.

Good luck in your decision.

I love them both but if I could choose only one it would be the Contego hands down.

I love the Stryker, carried the original 910 for years and I have a 908 but between the two I think the Contego the overall more capable and stronger knife. Plus I prefer the larger M390 blade.

You can't go wrong either way, they are both exceptional knives on every level so which ever appeals to you most go for it...

Best of luck!

I guarntee if you get one you will want the other. So I would get them both and see which one is harder for you to part with. I bet you keep both though.:D I personally like the Stryker better but really like the Contego too. Like the 275 better than both. I think.

Awesome pic! Man those do look really good and in direct comparison the Contego looks better for my uses. I think I'll end needing both... now that I realize that, the choice is which is first

I was trying to decide between those two and a couple others recently. I finally decided on the Contego. Awesome knife, and there was nothing wrong with it, but it just wasn't for me. The blade shape just didn't grow on me like I hoped it would (looks, not performance issue). So, it got traded off. If I would have gotten the Stryker (drop-point version), I would probably still have it. If you like the looks of the Contego then its an awesome knife, and you won't be disappointed. I just like more traditional looking blade shapes. I also don't really like coated blades.

+1 for the contego. I carried my contego through six months of a twelve month rotation in Afghanistan and can't say enough about that knife. I still rotate it in about one week a month, it carries very well for a knife with a nearly 4 inch blade. Personaly I like the blade shape and love the deep carry pocket clip. I have the m4 version and I am careful to keep it coated in tuf-glide and I've had no issues.

JUST got a Contego, and it has replaced the 710 that I was EDCing for the past year [ almost ].

Its a bit heavier, but I love BIG folders and this has that feel.

First shop was a total bust. Nothing I was interested in. They had a 484 nakamura, but it's just too small. It looks great in pics and I think if they up sized in to a 3.6+ blade and kept the handle to blade ratio it would be nice, but its just too small for me. I was really disappointed. I do have one more possibility that's only 6 blocks from where we are staying in Savannah. I would be really bummed if I was forced to break tradition and not get a knife on the trip

Buy the Contego I love mine especially for food prep. Long thin blade for slicing. But dude you gotta umnumzaan use it that knife is bad ass!

Agree. The 908 looks like the blade was put into a shrink chamber. It needs to be a bit taller to properly fit the "new/recycled" handle. It just looks off. As for M390 over CPM-M4, it's a toss up, you really cannot go wrong with either. The CPM-M4 coating will flake off with use much faster than other coatings. Also, I'm not sure it would provide much protection against corrosion under the surface as the bond between coating and steel might not be all that it could be considering the ease of which it comes off. In any case, I like both versions of the Contego.

Only the M390. I wouldn't use a Cerakoted blade for preparing food that any living person or pet I care about would consume. YMMV.
