Time to give away the very first of many, many, many, many Izula II's to come.

If you want it, you need to put together a PSK.

No rules per se, but the best wins. The most compact, well thought out, most inexpensive, one that includes the most items, best use of space, most innovative container....All that stuff counts for brownie points. Think it out.;)

All the usual stuff applies, Gold or higher, if you break a nail we won't replace it or repaint it for you, impale yourself with a fish hook it's on you, don't steal your contents, Jeff won't bail you out.

We'll run this for two weeks and Tony will be heavy in the judging as he's the local PSK guru. (If you never noticed, all Altoids tins have his initials stamped on them, seriously).

A pic of your prize to get the juices flowing and get the drool running:

This contest got me thinking about what would be the best possible minimalist PSK. What would provide the most versatility with the fewest number of items. i chose the following:

Victorinox Pioneer Farmer
1 Storm proof match
1 Cloth Bandaid
ESEE Survival tips card
Zip top bag from the Izula handle scales

The match provides a source of light and fire, it's water proof and does not require batteries. once you get your fire going as long as you keep it going you only need one match.

The Bandaid you can cut the cotton pad off and use it as tinder. you can use it to bandage a wound. You can cut it into strips and use it for lashing, so many good uses for it.

As for the Vic Farmer it seems to have a good array of tools that would be helpful. the knife to carve spears, hand drill/bow drill, traps, etc. the saw to cut wood for shelter, etc. plus the myriad of other uses for it.

The bag can be uses for emergency water storage, it can also keep your tinder dry. it's a good small waterproof container.

as for the ESEE card it's one of the paper ones, not one of the plastic ones. So it can be used for tinder or just as reading material when you are making like a bear in the woods plus the survival tips might save your life!

This doesn't have nearly the amount of items as some people's so I doubt this will win, but this is everything I need. I'd like to think I could survive with only a knife, so everything else is just gravy. I kept this small, so that I would actually carry it all the time. No amount of gear will help you if you don't have it with you when you need it. I keep this tin in my cargo pocket almost everyday.

Contents:
2 bandaids
1 butterfly strip
1 Sting Relief
2 Alcohol Pads
1 Two foot strip of Gaze
Pill pack (2 pepto bismol tabs, 4 water purification tabs, 2 benadryl tabs)
1 LED flash light (red light to preserve night vision)
4 cotton type tinders
1 rescue whistle
1 fishing kit (4 hooks, line, sinkers, swivels, 4 safety pins)
1 fire kit (7 waterproof matches)
1 razor blade
1 5 foot roll of duct tape
1 can opener
1 rescue signal mirror
1 button compass
1 RAT survival card

I have on my person, nearly 24/7:
An Izula
An ESEE-3MIL or ESEE-4 (depends what I feel like carrying that day)
An ESEE Fire Kit w/tinder in the compartment
A Paracord bracelet w/ fishing line, 2 hooks and 4 water proof matches woven into it. (as seen below)

I'll start by saying that I have gear that I EDC (knife, flashlight, lighter etc.) So, I don't really consider it "PSK" gear. More like common sense gear. Anyway, here is what I carry 100% of the time when I'm out in the bush. I'll even carry it on car trips, general outings etc. Its there. Pretty simple. A Martin Swinkles technical sheath with my RC-3, a firesteel, 2 Aquatabs, a piece of fatwood wrapped in jute cord and a speedy sharp tied to a brass whistle. Sharpener does multiple duty as a striker for the firesteel, scrapes or prys if needed and well, keeps the knife sharp. I have used and tested this kit and I can reliably start a fire, purifiy water, signal for help and construct a shelter if needed. That's it. Sure I could have other stuff, but this covers a lot of bases for me and is something I carry anyway. Thanks for the contest!!

^ I use a knife kit as well, it's on my person so in the event I were ever to be separated from my pack, I should have enough kit to rough it out a night or two if need be

besides the knife, kit contains a Swedish Army Firesteel w/ scraper, mini Bic, four tinder tabs, two wetfire tinders, ~ 20' of 550 cord, 16 oz MRE beverage bag, 4 Micropur water treatment tabs, Photon Micro light, Fox whistle, signal mirror, 25# test Spectra line wrapped around a large needle (sealed in a straw) and a 8 pack of Steri-strips

all right well i want the new izula 2 so its time to put in work. here is a kit i just built for this occasion from left overs from other built kits and just stuff around the house.

used altoid tin
mini bic
rat ferro rod w/ magnesium
AMK slim howler whistle
3 mini ranger bands for fire
10 wind/water proof matches w/ striker in a vial
4 tinder quicks, wrapped in jute twine for fire
small stick of fatwood
mini roll of duct tape
small signal mirror
20 mm button compass
2 band aids
randall's adventure survival card
5 ft of para cord
mini fishing kit, hooks, sinkers, fishing line, needle, 3 safety pins
a bryan breeden psk tin knife (this thing is like a freaking laser)
1 large ranger band to keep kit closed, hold the whistle
1 non lubricated condom for water

and on to the pictures. i have to agree with semperparatus. i believe for it to be a true psk you have to have it with you at all times. i have a get home bag that is bigger and much more detailed, I also always have more kit with me. but i know if i got lost in the woods or even had to make it home due to a natural disaster this kit could help me stay alive for sure. the only thing i would like to add to it is a survival blanket for shelter but when i did it w/ my other kits they got to big and i didn't want to keep it in my cargo pocket and found myself leaving w/ out it for edc, so i ditched the blanket and went back to carrying it.

up close and personal (condom is missing here during the photo shoot some things happend out of my control and it was consumed..damn my wife) ps non lubricated condom suck for anything more than water gathering

DSCN1499.jpg

i made one for my wife and this is how she said she plans to carry it on a daily :)

DSCN1491.jpg

i also want to point out that its very hard to fit that bottle of single barrel jack in my cargo pocket at all times but i feel the survival values of it are worth the troubles to say the least. i really wish i knew how to type in sarcastic text :)

either way thanks esee for the chance i had fun putting this little kit together and good luck to everyone

Victorinox Rucksack model SAK
Exotach NanoStriker

These two tools and a lot of knowledge go a long way.

What does the "P" in PSK stand for? Pretty cool little kits. Mine are way too large to fit in this category.

Personal. Which designates more of an individual, easy-to-carry survival kit.

I have a larger one in my car for myself, my wife and four kids and an even bigger 72-hour "trunk" in my home for our whole family.

Firstly, thanks for the awesome contest!

This is a quick, versatile, and easy to assemble PSK. I call it the Bandana PSK.

It is meant to be accompanied by an Izula.

When put together, it can be worn as a bandana, it can be folded compactly into a pocket, or it can be put into any other functional configuration. I prefer to wear it as a bandana in the outdoors, so that is what is shown below. If I was in a populated area, I would fold it up and pocket-carry it as a more subtle PSK. The kit contents are really not that noticeable when its all put together and tied up;).

A bonus of having it on your head is that it wont get soaked if you cross a deep stream and it keeps your pockets free. When the ends are tied together, none of the contents can come out either.

The structure is very loose, so there are endless possibilities of things that could be put into a bandana.

Most of the items are very inexpensive and easy for anyone to find. There are only a few survival type products that are less common (the compass, the fire-rod, and the 550 cord).

Contents:

-Bandana

-Tea candle

-Two fathoms of 550 cord

-*Two unlubricated condoms (not pictured)

-**Plastic bag with medication

-Plastic bag with alcohol pads

-Plastic bag with:

a. Button Compass

b. 3/4 inch wide roll of duct tape (wrapped around a strike anywhere match-head that was dipped in wax)

c. Aluminum pealess whistle

d. Dental floss

e. 11 Strike anywhere matches with wax-dipped heads

f. Fire-rod (Comes with Izula Kit -I am guessing they are inexpensive)

*Note: I didn't have any unlubricated condoms, and I would like if they could still be counted. If not, its all in good fun:thumbup:.

**Note: The medication shown is Anti-diarrheal. In a perfect world I would also add some water purification tabs. The water tabs I have now, have probably gone bad:(.

Folding everything up, I like to keep it to one side of the bandana.

Just fold one half over...
