CONTEST -- How many Survival Mistakes did I make?

So we got about 8-10” of snow overnight. It was the first real snow of the season. I find I’m often overtaken with a degree of boyish enthusiasm with the advent of the first good snow. That sense of adventure proved to be true again this morning as I gazed out on a world dressed freshly in white. So, I grabbed the dog, my snow shoes, and some kit, and headed out into the gently falling snow for a short day hike in the foothills. Great day and I made it back alive, although I was cold, wet, and tired when I got back.

Here’s the contest: I made a number of survival mistakes both in preparation and in execution of today’s wintry foray. The first person to enumerate all my mistakes and prove what a dumb-ass I am wins $100.00 US toward a custom knife. “Survival Mistakes” will be defined as imprudent actions, oversights in preparation, poor planning, in-actions, and downright stupidity leading to potentially poor outcomes (death or loss of limb) or just diminished ability to survive in a winter environment. For example, failure to take a knife along would be considered a mistake [by me]. As I think about it, the number of mistakes I made today is actually pretty large. Note that there is a fair degree of subjectivity in the judging [by me] here. I am open to constructive debate, and wise advise on what might have constituted a “survival mistake” on my part, but I reserve the right to determine if an action or in-action constituted a mistake. I have a list of mistakes I made, but my list is not necessarily the definitive list. I realize that this is a bit like grading your own test, but it is my contest. Hopefully we can have some fun, teach each other about winter survival, keep a knifemaker working, and I won't lose to much respect in your eyes. If I ever had any to begin with :D.

The Prize: $100.00 US toward a custom knife.

The Fine Print: You pick the Bladeforums.com knifemaker you want to order from and order the knife of your choice. I send $100.00 to the worthy knifemaker (preferably by Paypal; US Postal Money order is my second choice). You pay the balance due to the knifemaker for your order. Knifemakers are eligible to play, but if they win, they must order a knife from another Bladeforums.com knifemaker--they cannot order a knife from themselves. I will only send money to a Bladeforums.com registered knifemaker.

The usual rules apply: 1) must be 18 and legally able to own a knife, 2) One guess per person per day, 3) I’m the sole judge of the winner, 4) Contest ends evening of 12 Oct 09, let’s say 1800 MST or when ever I feel like we have a winner, 5) you have to compile a complete and inclusive list of my stupidity yourself. (So it will pay to read other people’s guesses and steal the good ones when compiling your own list.)

Bonus rules: 6) You can ask questions! I have intentionally given out very little information about my stupidity so far. You have to do the work. 7) Questions do not count as guesses (unless you ask a question and make a guess in the same post) and there is no limit on questions per day. Now, bear in mind, I’m not sitting at the computer all day, so I’ll get around to answering questions when I can.

Contest starts now!

p.s. First mistake: didn’t take a camera, but I did have my phone:

Yes, this is another one of my hare-brained contests that will likely go horribly wrong.

As you survived there was no mistake ...

but I guess you might have underestimated how different walking in the snow would feel and thus chosen a longer route than you should

Did you end up stepping of some thin ice, getting a little wet, and tried to build a fire but had no dry tinder or water proof matches in your kit?

Sort of. I did break through some ice and sloshed through some water in a low, marshy area. And got wetter. I didn't try to build a fire at that point, however.

Thanks Kitty, but just because I didn't pay for my mistakes doesn't mean I didn't make any. :o

I did end up going a bit further than I anticipated.

did you wear improper clothes (ie cotton based clothes in winter) ?

From the ground up I wore:

MSR snow shoes, one pair
Danner Sundowner Boots, one pair
Keen wool socks (love the fit), one pair
Khaki chinos, one pair
Carhartt belt, leather, one
Russel athletic T-shirt, one
Sweatshirt, one
Marmot Softshell, one
Hat, wool, knit (made it myself :))

Did you take a knife???

I'm a dumb-ass, but not that much of a dumb-ass. I had a SAK and a Bryan Breeden PSKK with me. Bryan's knife is new for me, but I didn't take pictures since I didn't have my camera along. (I only thought about the phone camera at the end of the trek.)

over confidence! your boyish enthusiasm got the best of your judgement!

.....i think there was a thread about this recently

I'm sure you didn't take a map.
cause in your mind you wouldn't need one, going to a little walk so close to home.
or did you?

Any survival tools for shelter and/or fire in case you got stranded? A fire was mentioned but you did not mention what you had with you other than a couple knives.

I was only a few miles from home, and was in somewhat familiar territory so I didn't think I needed a map.

Funny how stuff looks different when covered in snow, eh?

When you eventually tried to make a fire, did you successfully make one under a tree whose branches and leaves were covered with snow, then either the melting snow or a large chuck of snow fall on the fire or you.

While you made it home safe, you jeopardized the health of your dog without his consent.

The immortal 10 essentials exist for a reason, and the dog needs support gear on hand as well.

This being said, my dog would not hesitate to go either.

Did you let yourself sweat?
Did you take your phone?
Did you have gloves?
Did you remember to slip your handy dandy PSK in your pocket before you left?
