SOG Forum Contest

You asked for it…we listened…now it’s here! You have found the official SOG Forum contest.

The Contest Overview & Guidelines:

We’ll keep this simple (but make it different than others). Here’s what we would like. Write a short essay (or poem) of about 150-300 words following one of the following lead-ins as an example:

  • A SOG knife is the perfect companion because…
  • I want to own a SOG knife (or another SOG knife) because…
  • A SOG knife represents _________ to me, because…

Can you get the drift that we are wide open here? Accordingly, we are not going to count words or disqualify someone for a technicality. We are just interested in being appropriately entertained, having you express some creativity in prose, and of course giving away a SOG knife. We do ask that all entries be appropriate and tasteful.

A side benefit of this contest for SOG is that we can gain material for marketing purposes. If your story is true, please label it as such. By entering the contest, you are giving SOG permission to possibly use your material for marketing purposes sometime in the future. The contest winner will not be judged on marketing potential.

Winning this Contest:

Here are some important points of interest and other guidelines relative to the contest:

  • The winner will successfully entertain us on a SOG related topic.
  • All entries will be read and voted upon by a panel of SOG employees. In the event there is a tie, a random drawing will take place to select the winner.
  • The contest starts right now! The last day to submit your entry is on June 10, 2001 (BladeForums.com time).
  • The winner will be announced within ten days of completion of the contest.
  • Though we would prefer the entry to be posted here, last minute entries can be turned into the SOG booth (Booth #97) at the Blade Show in Atlanta.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older to enter the contest. By posting an entry, you are stating that you are 18 years of age or older and willing to have it verified.
  • Employees of SOG Specialty Knives & Tools, Inc., participating vendors, their dependent and immediate families, anyone irresponsible with handling knives, as well as employees of contest sponsors are not eligible to participate or win any contest from SOG Specialty Knives & Tools, Inc.

The winner will be notified via email and announced in this forum. To redeem the prize, the winner will need to provide us their mailing address for shipment and their phone number.

The Prize:

A SOG Scuba/Demo Prototype!

scubademo_small.jpg

Here are two larger photos to enjoy: Image 1 and Image 2.

Six Scuba/Demo prototypes were made for display at the S.H.O.T. Show 2001. This knife differs from the production model in that etched on the end of the pummel are the words “PROTOTYPE S.H.O.T. 2001” and are made of high carbon tooling steel. (Six more were later made of stainless steel and stamped with the same words of its pummel.)

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Scuba/Demo Details (Regarding the production model from SOG promotional material)

If it were any rarer, there wouldn’t be one at all…The SOG Scuba/Demo is the rarest SOG knife and the rarest military knife in existence. How can we claim this? Because only one original knife is know to exist today. We are now offering a reproduction of this amazing, mystical knife. We have vastly improved the knife in every way to make it a high-quality, functional knife that you will be proud to own and use.

The seven and a quarter inch stainless steel blade is a rugged .230 inches thick and most uniquely a double-edged blade with serrations along the spine. The full tang is surrounded by a stacked leather washer handle that is epoxied together and secured with a brass pommel and spanner net. An elegant brass crossguard insures a sure grip and also contributes to the excellent balance of this fighter/field knife.

Each Scuba/Demo will come with a black leather sheath, sharpening stone, and leather lanyard. The first 250 will have serial numbers.

Specs: Weight: 12.8 ounces / Overall: 12.25” / Blade: 7.25” / Steel: AUS8A, Rc 57-58 / Suggested Retail: $230.00</font>

This is one, sweet knife!

Let the contest begin! Post your entry below. Good luck.

To me a SOG knife represents those who have fought and died in a "war" many miles from home. Those three little letters, S-O-G, mean quality and commitment. SOG knives were prized possesions over there, knives that a man could rely on to save his ass if need be.
Many of those who carried one never came back. Those that did, cherish those pieces of steel and leather and the memories, some bad, some good, that come with it.

I am too young to remember the Vietnam Conflict, but I am not too young to know what happened over there. I did have family who fought and died in that God-awful place. My uncle came home from Vietnam a changed man, others never go the chance. We as Americans must never forget those who came before us and made the ultimate sacrifice. Pretty soon, everything we learn about Vietnam will be only from the history books.
We must take the time to treasure the thoughts of those who were there and listen, and care. I could care less about winning the knife, it's not my top priority here, but if I do I will be most grateful. With Memorial Day fast approaching, I wish everyone who reads this thanks a Vet, from any of the US's conflicts. I am Gulf War vet, USAF 89-93, and I am proud of my service to my country and proud of my uncle and those who are no longer with us.

So to sum it up........SOG = Rememberance.

SOG to me means quality and pride.
My Every day carry at work is a Magnadot and A Para tool. After 10 years the sheath is wearing out. 10 YEARS! of crawing under machinery.threw ducting and on my belly. So if the sheath lasted that long im probably going to be giving this knife to my Grandchildrens Grandchildren. (hell i bet if i sewed some new velcro on it it would last another 5 years.) THATS QUALITY!
The Para tool will pay for its self.
A week after i got my Para tool i had a call back to work to repair a machine that was down. I punched in and walked 20 feet to this vacuume spider pulled out my Para tool and opened the lid of the spider saw a paint chip under the B leg of the starting contactor blew it out closed the lid. I made 4 hours of call time ($120.00)I was there
less then 5 min.
PRIDE I'v never served in any of the braches
so i dont really know the feeling of pride you get from that but im hopping its the same feeling i get when i hold a Tigershark
And if its not then it must be the next best think to it. (note to self buy more Seal knifes.)
My oldest just enlisted and if i win this contest im going to give it to him. Im hopping the pride of owning this knife now will help get him threw his training and become one of the elite.

A SOG knife is the perfect companion because they produce very good knives at reasonable prices. When I asked for details on a Recondo, Ron sent them right out to me. How many knife companies do that? SOG strike me as a company that involve respect, respect for the product and respect for the user, if you have a question or a problem, SOG is the company to trust. SOG produce a product that asks to be used, they don't have a false philiosphy of producing 'art' knives that break, they make knives to own, to use. I don't know what SOG stands for, but to me it means Sincerity, Origonality and being Genuine with the customer.

My post is not funny or witty, but this is not the comedy central. When I want a solid knife, a SOG is always in the list. I know when I buy my first SOG knife, I will be pleased with it. My contact with SOG and conversations with SOG owners convinces me that a SOG product is a dependable product and when you are eating worms and ****ting in the woods, what else counts? Nothing.

When I think of SOG, I, like Remster135, am reminded of the Vietnam war. I agree with everything Remster135 said. As a matter of fact, he expressed my thoughts better than I could. I hope Remster135 wins the knife.

P.S. to Remster: Vietnam was the war I should have fought in, but back problems kept me out of the service, despite repeated efforts to enlist. Thank you for your service in the Gulf War.

A Sog knife is the perfect companion because,
Well let me Tell you why. About two and a half years ago I was bitten by the travel bug, and decided to go on a Fishing/Camping trip to Oregon. The drive lasted about 14 hours, and left me quite drained. luckily I was able to muster enough energy to set up camp before night fall. After setting up camp, I had a couple of beers and dozed off to the sedating sounds of nature. at about three in the morning, I was awakened by a loud high pitched, blood curdling screech, that I have never heard in all my years of camping. My first feeling was fear because I knew that I did not have a firearm, but then a wave of comfort embraced me as I rememberd that I was armed with my sog bowie.
After mustering up the courage to investigate the sound, I stepped out of my tent with my sog in one hand, and my maglight in the other. I heard in the bushes
about twenty five yards left of me the rustling sound a large animal makes. So I Approached very slowly, making as much noise as possible. Well just my luck a three hundred and fifty pound wild boar came out of the bushes running at me full speed. Your'e Fuc@$d is the first thought that came to mind, but as if by magic my Reflexes took over and I was able to jump to the side while at the same time stick my bowie into the side of the boars neck. This is why a sog knife makes the perfect companion. It saved my life, and it brought home the bacon litteraly.

OK here's mine below:

SOG

It's kind of part of the lingo. Ess Oh Gee. Like ABC. Or XYZ.
And it comes from America. Land of the free.
Sure there are knives, folders and tools all over
But get yourself a SOG and you'll find yourself in clover.
It's like whenever you've a need to skin a rabbit
Some knives make a drudge out of a habit.
But using your SOG kind of helps things along
You might even find yourself humming a song.
For life on the street
Folders are neat.
Although in my humble view the very best of the lot
Are those multi extreme tools which do hit the spot.
Fixing things is no chore.
Any more.
Cockney rhyming slang even has a phrase for SOG tools.
Crown jewels.

Long, but ...

Once upon a midnight dreary, while she pondered eyes all bleary,
Over knives that I had considered scarcely not an hour before.
Poring through the cat'log's mapping, ever conscious of a rapping,
Of her shod foot firmly tapping, tapping on the kitchen floor.
"Not THIS one," she pointed, foot tapping on the kitchen floor.
"Not this one and not one more!"

Ah, distinctly I remember, my eyes alit like glowing ember,
When each happy fam'ly member brought birthday gifts inside our door.
Eagerly, I tore them open - curious and ever hoping
For the SOG, no more to covet - covet as I had before!
For that SCUBA fixed blade that I never had before!
With gleaming steel galore!

And the power of that feeling, sure to send my mind a-reeling,
Thrilled me - filled me with visions chilling to my very core.
So that now to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,
"Now surely I can have that knife that I did not buy before.
The dive knife that I did not buy before.
But have always wanted, and could not ignore."

Now at last the urge was stronger, growing large from waiting longer,
"Dear," said I, "uh, Sweetheart, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was crazy, you know that I'm much too lazy
And my memory is hazy, hazy like those times before,
"Certainly I had not committed to quit this hobby before,
Certainly," of this I swore.

Deep into her dark eyes peering, long I sat there wondering, fearing,
Headed for a place where no man returns without a chore.
But her glare remained unbroken, and there she stood, solid, oaken,
I heard the words before she'd spoken, "Not this one and nothing more."
Part of this I repeated, and murmured back the words "Nothing more?"
Yes, this I'd heard in times before.

Feverishly, my mind churning (proper responses I'm still learning)
If I add to my collection, she would show me the door.
For my knives sat in corners dusty, some ATS, still others rusty,
Soon I'd stammer or I'd sweat, sweat out of every pore.
She'd see my scheme from the sweat coming out of every pore.
If this occurs, I get none more.

"Hon...," I started, ever hoping, for careful words, I'd been groping
As if searching for a diamond in a thousand tons of ore.
I felt as if I had been stranded, or as common crook been branded,
By feable, myriad excuses, excuses ever thinner wore.
Hopelessly, I thought excuses that ever thinner wore.
Only these, and thought none more.

There she stood, eyes beguiled, sparkling, and then she smiled.
A look reserved for special times, for at my soul it tore.
Cautious treading here demanded, as I felt soon to be remanded -
I feared I knew her likely plan to be constraining her amour.
There was no torture more direct than constraining her amour.
Horrific torture, none worse more.

Cursed greed of knife collection! Must it deprive me of affection?
These demons raced about my head like ghosts from days of yore.
The SOG SCUBA is a beauty, surely fit for diving duty,
And like a pirate's love of booty, my yearning I could not ignore.
Yet save my hobby (and my marriage) which I could not ignore.
Not sleep on the couch a month or more.

With racked brain, strained unnerving, to demonstrate or show deserving
And receive a gift that my spouse may very well abhor!
For, see I feel that if my wife, were to have herself this very knife
It may just well change her life, or at least opinions that she bore.
She may see error, see the scorn for the opinions that she bore.
And firm tapping of her foot, I'd hear nevermore.

So, SOG Team, now I plead - that my affliction you will feed.
Despite the fact my wife may freak and lock her "lovin' coeur."
Or it may be her great pleasure, to possess a diving treasure
A prize I'd very dearly measure, like my wife (who I adore.)
So please, SOG folks (a comp'ny likewise who I adore)
Send that prototype to our door?

An SOG knife is the perfect companion for me because they have a diversified range of products that suit everyone, including me.

SOG, their name suits them perfectly, they study and observe what the trends are, and what type of knife designs can suit the general public, and in so, they benefit the general knife user group.

Here's why I'd like to own another SOG knife. When I think of SOG knives, the first thing that comes to mind is today's combat knife. Just as the Kabar was World War II's and Korea's serviceman's knife, the SOG is today's. A serviceman's combat knife needs to be capable of doing much more than just being a backup weapon to your gun, or the rare occassion of sentry removal. It must be able to open ammo crates, chop through up to about 3" wood, slice food, extract stuck brass, open cans, and any of 100 other uses that pop up when you're out in the field without proper tools. In today's wars, it isn't often that a knife has to be used as a weapon, but it does need to be capable if the need arises.
As a Viet Nam era veteran, I was fortunate to handle a few friends original sterile SOG bowie's. They had a nice balanced quick feel to them. They are also a part of our Armed Forces history and stir up that same chord inside of me that looking at our flag, an M16, or a flak jacket do. Thank you SOG for supplying our boys with the best.

SOG means saving the day...

Mid Feburary 1994. 1st Infantry Division, 1-16 Infantry C-company field excersise. With all our vehicles covered with nylon rope and plastic camo webing, this was the only cover from the ice storm that baragged us that night. When we began moving about early that morning it was evident that it was going to be a very long day. Everything was frozen solid! The netting was so cold there was no way to remove it from vehicals. My first thought upon see it was "Cool looking", everything being coved in ice! But then realizing that we had to remove this stuff in order to get moving, kind of stunk. Soldiers starting pulling, shaking and hitting the webbing with anything they could find. Mainly E-tools(folding shovels). As normal gear on my LBE, I was carring my SOG Pentagon. At the time the knife was hardly used at all. And the serrated side hadn't been touched. Well, if I'm going have this knife in field I'd better use it right? Being the only one out here that had a serrated knife, I began sawing away. I first cringed at the sound of the blade cutting through the ice, but was quite surprised on how easy it was! Pretty soon others were noticing what I was doing and began asking me for the knife. At first I thought to myself, "heck with you...this is my knife"; then realizing that if I lent the knife out, it would make less work for me. So..."here ya go, have at it!". After receiving my SOG back, I almost cried. It had been, shall I say...very well broken in! But an evening of sharpening did the trick. So, I guess you could say the SOG Pentagon saved the day that morning in field for Charlie Company. Along with the help of the sun, I guess we were moving by 10:30am. Since then I've been honorably dischargerd from the ARMY, and also retired the old Pentagon for a new one! Case in point? SOG...don't go to the field without one!

Very good, Mr. Bennet. I think you owe Mr. Poe an apology.

I admit I've been trying to come up with a poem along the famous poem lines, but I doubt I can beat that. Excellent

The SOG knife is a symbol of the best of the best, the American Green Beret.

A basic tool that provides the means for Shelter, food, and protection.

The SOG knife is the symbol and tool of only this group of professional warriors no other.

These are selfless men who are Dedicated to the liberation of the opressed. Regardless of the color, creed, or Nationality. There have been no other group of people that have sacrificed so much in the name of Human freedom or dignity. In the history of the world. They protect the ideals of the greatest nation by sacrificing thier closeness to family and country in far away lands with people that are not fortunate enough to be born in a free land.
The SOG knife stands above all others as the tool used by these execptional warriors. A reminder of the sacrifice and dedication that was given by the US Special forces in a foreign country to protect the values and beliefs of our ancestors. It is the tool of the Modern War, not the war of your fathers.

In the New millenium, the age of High tech. The SOG knife will remain one of the ikons. The constant companion of the Professional Warrior, a SOG knife, tool, weapon and symbol.

Just some rambleing before the 1st. cuppa.

Cheers,
God Bless you and keep you and yours from the beast in the night.

Guns are for show. Knifes are for Pros.

The perfect companion knife is A SOG
because it has helped get me through a bog,
and even my friend liked it, and he is a frog,
it is as reliable as a good dog,
and won't rust easily in a jungle fog,

I want to own another SOG knife,
just to piss off my wife,
she asks, why do you want more than one,
and I say, because collecting is so much fun,
she says, why do you want more when you don't shareum,
and I answered, for the same reason that most men dream about having a harem,
she says, so multiple wives is your adage?
and I say, no, just the fun without the baggage.
she saysa, so you probably want some pale blond Britts,
I say, no just want them with big..errr..."lips",
she says, so big "lips" for you are perfection at it's closest,
I say, no I just like the hostess with the mostest,

A SOG knife represents freedom to me,
because it has become part of our history,
the name SOG is synonymous with quality,
and all this comes at a fair price,
and won't give a government employee's wallet a big surprise,

you might wonder why this poem changes direction,
and that's because the use of all three lead-ins required the use of more connections,
the use of all three is no sin,
it's that I just want to win.

SOG stands for "Son Of a Gun" because the Bubbas down south say "Weeelllll, SonOfaGun" (imagine a southern accent, folks) as they skin raccoons for hats - they just can't believe how well the damn things cut.

I want to own a SOG knife because I am a poor college student and can't afford to buy a knife from discount knife outlets and if I win this contest - I won't have to pay a darn penny.

An SOG knife represents an opportunity of a lifetime - who else is classy enough to have a contest to win something fer free.

Peace brothers and sisters - SOG is here to stay!

Scene 1: Crayola enters, distraught, crying for help with rhyming lines:

Ron@SOG, Ron@SOG, please help me!
I have a little problem, can't you see?
I NEED that SOG Scuba bowie,
'cuz my big belt knife is a Frosts Cutlery!

Ron@Sog, Ron@SOG, where fore art thou?
I am having troubles, I feel as mad as a cow!
My knives are made by Frosts or Chariman Mao.
Can you help me? Please tell me how?

Scene 2: Here comes the help!
*** Note the change in style...

Calm down Crayola, take it easy.
Please tell me what is wrong.
We at SOG can surely help you,
we have blades, from short to long!

Ok, Ron, then look in my pocket,
Please tell me what you see?
I don't see anything Crayola.
THAT'S RIGHT, it is EMPTY!!

I have boxes to open and tape to cut.
I need to open mail and cut string.
I want to sharpen a pencil and trim a nail,
I need to cut this, that and the other thing!

No problem Crayola, SOG can help!
You need something with cutting zip.
Something to handle string, boxes and mail,
and that thing is an AutoClip!

Thank-you Ron, I new you could help.
but my problems aren't over.
Sometimes I like to walk in the woods,
just me and my dog Rover.

What do I do when I'm in the woods
and I need to build a fire?
Or build a weather proof shelter?
you know, when I'm down to the wire?

No problem Crayola, SOG can help!
If you are in the woods you'll face danger.
To ward off the bad weather or the bears,
you'll need to take a Northwest Ranger!

Thanks again Ron, you are a great help.
But now I need a fighting knife!
What if I need to save my granny,
or my girlfriend, or my own life?

Look no firther Crayola my friend,
and pick up a SOG SEAL 2000.
Tough stainless steel, razor sharp edge
and it fits so perfect in your hand.

O.K. Ron, now I have a fighter,
a pocket knife and a Camp knife. YA!
But I have one last problem,
what about a knife for SCUBA?

No problem Crayola, SOG can help.
SOG makes a traditional SCUBA knife.
Use it to dig, chop, slice or cut with,
you could even use it to save a life!

Thank-you, thank-you Ron@SOG!
SOG's knife sellections are pretty sites!
Now all I need is a knife for my wallet,
and one for special wine and dining nights!

Hey Crayola, no problem there!
Check again our SOG knife sellection.
SOG has something for every need,
be it camping, EDC or personal protection!

Scene 3: Crayola's heart-filled solliloque:

THAT is what SOG knives means to me. The SOG unit bought off the shelf, had made or made themselves whatever tool they needed for the job at hand. SOG knives has duplicated this attitude in their knife offerings. Credit card knives, folders, military knives, knives for the water, different types of locks, camping type knives, pure fighters, and reproductions of knives to honor the people involved in MACV SOG. To add to that, SOG has done their best to offer this sellection of knives at prices for everyone's price range. AND, SOG knives comes on the forums to talk to us knife knuts, ask us about out knife needs and have soem fun too. SOG kicks butt, as SOG always has. Thank-you.

SOG knives: Choose your own adventure!
