Continuation of my allen wrench leather tool... star hex pattern.

Waaay cool Salem. If I was doing much for straight blades I'd be making them, maybe even tapering
to smaller sizes. Pretty endless what you could do with that idea.
Ken.

Thanks Ken! William, the idea was founded upon the idea of making a new tooling stamp in my shop, not requiring engraving, that could be built into a pattern. I hit upon an allen wrench with the bend cut off and the end polished, which gives a simple yet pleasing honeycomb type pattern. I posted that here, and there was some discussion about it- ways to mod it. The way that seemed most promising to start with was to file grooves in a star pattern, which I did. I may try half rounds with a chainsaw file on the next one.

It's hard to believe how cool that came out Salem... I had to come back and look again! :D Thank you for sharing it!!! :)

BTW- of course a hardened tool is going to outlast a soft one in the l--o--n--g run, but thought it was worth mentioning that a soft tool will stamp leather really well. Which is nice because you can make something up and try it out pretty quick. I made several stamps out of bolts and also 1/4" rod that I upset a head onto (don't have to fire up forge, just clamp it in a heavy duty vise and mushroom the end with a hammer :) ).

Larry Fuegen told me he has made MANY stamps out of big nails.

Of course if you come up with one you really like, I think it would be worth it to make a hardened version.

Just wanted to throw that in because I think it could spur more folks into trying their hand at making a custom stamp that might otherwise think it's too much work.

Your modified allen wrench stamp is definitely one of the coolest I have seen Salem!!!  :)

I did the same exact thing. I must have looked at that 6 or 7 times. Really cool. I never would have guessed that was an Allen hex wrench in a former life. Really well done, Salem. I might need to borrow your idea ;)

Not only am I going to borrow this great idea, I have some O1 round stock and am now thinking of several stamps I could make myself.

Jim, that's great. Exactly what I wanted out of this thread. I cut up another wrench and made a new pattern last night, that came out pretty cool. Once I get a good sheath out of it, I'll post it, too.

I've also looked at this a half a dozen times.

I had to squint and go crosseyed to see the hex again.

It's the snowflake / start that jumps out

Nice pattern.

Thanks for the tip. I have a bunch of metal stamps that I am going to try first, and then modify as necessary. ...Teddy
