Controlling atmosphere in Ellis Custom Knifeworks forges

I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my 6-HT forge from Darren Ellis, and I'm wondering how well you can control the atmosphere in these forges. They use venturi-style burners.

My current forge is a two-brick model fired by a JTH-7 torch, so I'm looking forward to the step up. It works pretty well--last night I was able to forge a point on a piece of 2" x 1/4" 1080 barstock--but it scales like crazy. After one heat, the scale flakes off in huge chunks.

I'm hoping my new forge will be adjustable to reduce scaling. :)

Also, Darren mentions that the forges have a flux-resistant bottom. I'm interested in doing some small-scale forge-welding, like wire damascus stuff. How much can the liner take before it needs to be replaced?

Josh,

The forge runs naturally reducing, but you can make it more so to a certain point by blocking the air intake on the burner.

The floor will last for years if applied properly.

My mother is back in the hospital, I'm at the critical care waiting room, it's going to be a few days at least before I make it back to the shop and am able to ship anything.

Darren,

Thanks for responding to my question. I didn't want to bug you, figuring you guys were busy with your exams and stuff. I pray all goes well with your mom!

A reducing atmosphere will be great. My little air-breather torch is probably about as oxidizing a heat source as I could get... :)
