Convert Wilton Sq Wheel to variable speed. What kind of $ am I looking at?

I posted an earlier question about my 20-something year old Square wheel that the original motor bit the dust. I wanted a replacement motor, and found plenty in the $275 range or thereabouts.

Now I believe I would do better with a variable speed setup like I have with my Bader.

What am I looking at cost wise? What should I be looking for as far as motors, speed control, etc?

Thanks for any suggestions. Have a great weekend.

From your previous thread:

It's nothing more than a standard 56c motor. Should be easy to replace it. The motor I'm currently using on my direct drive KMG was used on my old Wilton.

My Wilton was originally 1hp, single speed. I converted it to variable speed with a 2hp Leeson motor and KBAC-27 VFD. If you're thinking of going variable speed, remember that the motor has to be three phase to work with a vfd!!!!

I changed my square wheel grinder to a variable speed motor maybe 20 years ago. I don't remember what it cost. Something you may want to think about is the size of the drive wheel on the square wheel grinder. I found with the variable speed motor I needed a smaller drive wheel. Rob Frink made me one that fit perfectly.

Hardcore makes a 7-1/4" drive wheel for Wilton Square Wheels, too. Forgot to mention that - sorry!!! Maybe get require modifying the "arm" to allow for the difference in free length of belt. Hindsight being perfect vision, I'd have left the stock wheel on and let that sucker fly. Ceramic belts at high speed are like being born again.

Thanks for the replies. I have a "slow down" drive wheel already installed on the motor on life support. I hope I can somehow get it pulled off when it comes time to replace. The original 10" drive wheel seemed to be permanently attached to the drive wheel. Steering wheel puller just tore it off since the aluminum was so thin midways through the wheel.

Thanks Matthew for the reminder from my other thread. I'm going to check with an electrical supplier in town tomorrow that deals in such items.
