Converted a Friend to DE Shaving

After awhile, one gets to know when their blade needs changing. That wasn't clear at first, but now I know when it's time. One of the best razors in my stable, is my modified short handled Mergress. With a fresh blade I can hear it sing through the stubble; it's almost like a pitch, it's weird. When the blade dulls after four to five shaves I can actually hear the sound change.

BTW - I agree with the poster above, regarding using short concise strokes. With that method I usually get a very decent shave on the average of two passes. Combine the right angle, which every razor has, with a few minutes of prep time, and a good shave can be a very pleasant experience!

I generally get a week out of blade. my way of keeping things organized, so I always do a blade swap sunday night. If for what ever reason I miss some shaves with that blade, it doesn't matter since age does as much damage as use(I live in a very high humidity environment) I also pick my blade based on that schedule, so a blade that might start really good but can't do a week, doesn't stay in the stash. The only exception to that rule is that I keep some feathers around for special occasion shaves, usually where I have to shave a second time in 24 hours. I'd use feathers all the time, but I'm too cheap. Ha!

Had my second shave this morning. Very clean and no irritation, the bumps I had on my lower neck from my old conventional razor are nearly gone in 3 days. My variety pack of razors will be here today. I also ordered some prorasso eucalyptus and menthol shave cream and after shave as well as a pacific shaving company pre shave oil and nick stick. I never thought I would get so excited about shaving but there is an art to it and it changes Your daily routine for the better if you embrace it. What I am really blown away by is the cost of the razors

Great to hear you're enjoying it so much. It's a fun and relaxing moment in the day - "Me time" where I get that 10-15 min of zen and feel so refreshed afterwards.

Out of those, I would choose the Astra's, mainly the SP, the Gillette Silver Blue and the Supermax to the left of the Gillette Super Blue. I tried the Astra SP and like it. I heard great things about the Supermax Platinum's and Gillette Silver Blues so I ordered some but not here yet!

anyone see their favorite here? Which one should I try first?

I have the silver blue's and quite like them I find them about the same as my other fave, gillette 7 o'clock blues.

I also just noticed the Bics in there as well. Another of my go-to blades.

I have experience with Astras, which give great shaves. Bluebirds are next, and finally Feathers, which in the right hands give among the best shaves anywhere.

Guess mine are the wrong hands then. :) The Feathers work fine for me, but the Astras give me a smoother shave.

So many combinations with razors and blades. Actually the blade not on this listing is my favorite over Astras and just about anything else; the Israeli Red Personna has been my standard for years. I also like KAI's when I can afford them.

Cheers~!

Feathers are notorious on shaving forums for being ninja assassin sharp, so I probably wouldn't start with those. I have yet to try them myself. Out of my first variety pack I ordered when I started DE shaving, I liked Shark Chromes the best.

Out of the initial sampling I tested IP Reds, KAI, and Feathers. Both KAI and Feather were, and are very sharp. But they seemed to 'dull up' faster than the IP Red blades now used daily in my razors.

Astras are definitely my favourites of the ones I have tried. I prefer them over the Feathers. I use a dice to tell me how many shaves I have done with a blade.

I make my own preshave oil and aftershave balm so I have more money to try different shaving creams.

They are my fav blade too! It is great that they are only about $10 for a 100 too so stock up! :)
