Converting a 3 phase surface grinder to single phase?

I found a surface grinder at an unbeatable price two hours from me, but I'm almost positive its three phase.

I was thinking of switching it to single phase with a phase converter... but, Would a phase converter cause problems for the electromagnet (chuck)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dan, my old surface grinder has a belt drive, so I just put a single phase motor on it. Most have a motor that is an integral part of the machine, this would need a phase converter. There is no problems using a converter with the magnetic chuck.

That is what I have and it works great!

I too have a 1964 model K O Lee, belt driven put on a 110 3450 motor and 0 problems.

Do you still have the original motor? They're specially balanced. I have a surface grinder that needs a new motor. Wanna sell it?

Your much better off getting a VFD instead of a phase convertor. They are horribly ineffiecent and with a rotary you have another motor to deal with hence more power draw, the static ones are all but useless.VFD's give you all you need plus motor protection and adjustability.Dave:)

I've decided to take the advice I've been given and go VFD. Its a bit more expensive but I want to be able to get the full 2 hp out of the motor.

It turns out it doesn't come with a chuck so I'm just buying a permanent magnetic chuck.

Now I just need to sell $500 worth of damascus within the month and she is all mine. :D:D I'm very excited.
