Convex edge sharpening on a busse

Hey all,

I just picked up my first couple of convex edged blades recently, two Busse SAR 3's, and I plan to EDC one and keep the other in storage. I didn't know they were going to be convex edges when I bought them, and all I have ever used to sharpen are my Spyderco Sharpmaker and a diamond honing steel. I am not great at sharpening, but I can do a serviceable job, but from searching around on the forums it seems you have to use fine grit sandpaper and a lot of skill to sharpen a convex edge. I don't want to practice on my nice SAR 3 for fear of scratching it up, so my questions are:

1) Can I use my Sharpmaker to sharpen a convex edge?

2)Should I send the knife to Busse and have a regular beveled edge put on it, or is convex the way to go?

3)Is there a good sharpening system for convex edges out there that I should look into?

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Buy some 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit automotive wet/dry sandpaper and an opinel. Practice on the $10 knife. It's really pretty simple. Pull the edge away from the grit, say 5-10 passes a side, using no pressure other than the weight of the knife.
