convex edge sharpening

I have been wondering, that if when you sharpen a convex edge with a flat stone, or "v" stick style sharpener, if you arent removing the convex? That is if I understand what a convex edge is.

Looking at photo's and drawings of convex edges though, I cant really figure out how they are made and sharpened, unless with a slack belt grinder.

Am I thinking right?

Also, there seems to be very few blades factory or custom, that come with a convex edge, despite a pretty good argument for them to be "the best edge".

How do you convex edge owners sharpen?

A convex edge can be sharpened on a flat stone with some practice. You could also do it on a wider V style sharpener by starting vertical, and laying the blade against the stone as you slice down. On a style as slim as Spydercos, you'd have to do this many times over the blade length, and be careful not to get too even overlaps, less you get a wave in the blade.

I recently posted this question to the Marble Arms forum over at knifeforums.com. Jason's response seemed logical so I tried it. I figured he knew what he was doing as every factory Marble's I've seen is wicked sharp out of the box. Worked like a charm. Check it out.

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!
