Recommendation? Convex sharpening

Same here. I will miss his contribution to various discussions in BF. He's still in business though, so I will continue to have him sharpen my knives. He can take a knife with an average factory edge and transform it into an incredibly sharp cutting tool! A knife sharpened by Chris will have significantly higher performance than with the usual factory edge.
 
Just a personal note—I emailed Ban several weeks ago about a convex sharpening job. No response to date. Really didn’t expect one, as he told me many moons ago that he was getting out of that business.

I will say that I have done the same as well, I did that just recently and it is the second time in the past year or so that I have done so and I have not received response either time. So I think it's pretty safe to say that he is not taking on this work any longer.
 
Just do it yourself, I use an older Craftsman benchtop 2" belt sander with an assortment of belts.
Practice on a cheap Harbor Freight Machete and get comfortable with the sander first.



A Ken Onion Work Sharp, works good also for smaller jobs, I just stripped and sharpened my Proto Boss Jack. Went from my most dull knife, to scarry sharp!

Just the encouragement I need! Those look really nice!

Any trouble with rounding of the tips? Yours appear very clean like that wasn't an issue but it's one of the main things I'd imagine one would have to be careful to avoid.
 
Practicing with cheap knifes is the best way to gain confidence!
I rounded a few tips sharpening our steak knives when I got my first skinny belt Work Sharp. keep the knife perpendicular to the belt all the way through your stroke!
 
I will 2nd "Practicing with cheap knifes". I have the Work Sharp with the Blade grinding attachment and a HF 1x30. I think the key to not rounding the tip is in the WS instructions (see picture) Stop the tip of the knife on the middle of the belt. If you are working with a knife with a trailing point or a lot of curve near the tip you may need to change the angle a bit so the belt is at 90° with the edge of the knife, (see picture). This works the same with my HF Belt Sander.

I use a makita handheld belt sander turned upside down strapped to an aluminum bench with zip ties...Red-Neck as hell...but that's how I roll...works great after a few whiskey mixed drinks. First Busse I tried was a TGLB...turned out well....but I beat her to death on a few things that require more grinding....lol. I actually practiced on a machete and lawn mower blades to get the feel.
 
I was actually debating on posting something similar. I don't want to reprofile a blade, but I have convex busses that I'm just afraid to use because I have no idea how to sharpen them.

I have edge pro I use for everything else but no clue how to work with convex stuff.

I'd like to make my boss jack proto a main user... but don't feel like sending out every time needs sharpening.

I spoke to Chris from father and son. According to him there was a trade, and mid trade (guy mailed out his knife, Chis hasn’t yet mailed his) the guy descided to back out. Chris basically said a deal is a deal, so the guy got a mod involved. Chris basically was given what he felt was an ultimatum, go back on the deal or be banned. And that was that.

Just wanted to put his side of the story here since the topic cane up.
 
I have a few convex busses and Beckers. Once you get the edge blended into the convex shape your happy with or if it came to you with a convex edge they are really easy to sharpen.
Take a old mouse pad or something similar and lay some good wet/dry sandpaper on it, spray it with Windex and lightly strop it across the sand paper. I normally use 320-600 grit. You only need to get the very edge. A butcher steel will work if the edge just needs a little touch up.

Jerry Fisk has a good video about putting a convex edge on.
