I ran a contest a few months back for people to make a sharpening video to teach people how to sharpen convex edged knives. This is the result

Sharpening Videos

I think they are the definitive videos on the subject. The author uses a 2x4 to demonstrate the method and theory behind the methods for sharpening with a mousepad/leather.

Let me know what you guys think.

I am only through the first video - it is excellent!

THanks!

EDIT:

THis was flatly excellent for me. I have been nervous to do this kind of sharpening - now I am ready to try it. I feel like this really covered all the bases - what did the winner win?

Wish I had access to these last week. I'm looking forward to viewing them all.

Good video. I struggled with this for a long time until I saw a video that showed using your thumb as a pivot point to keep the tip down at the end of the stoke. It finally soaked through my thick head that the trick was simply keeping the darn edge on the paper throughout the whole stroke. Also I was so careful not to use to much down pressure that I was not using enough. I also had to scrap the mouse pad and use a thinner backing under the sandpaper.

Finally, I studied some of the edges that siguy did for me and kinda used them as a guide.:)

for me, the key was doing it tip to heel. It seemed awkward at first, but the motion naturally follows the edge. It assures that I get the tip done properly.

I tried to load the "if you only watch one" video and got about 1/4 of the way through. I'm on a 28.8 dialup (allright you guys...knock it off!) I know I know, I need a better connection!

Who is that sharpener Derrick? Who won?

He is Tradja on Knifeforums--I don't know if he has an ID over here. A great guy and obviously an excellent teacher.

Those are a great resource for anyone wanting to maintain a convex edge! Kudos to the instructor/video maker for the clear and concise content (love those 2x4 edge models pulled across the sleeping pad), and kudos to you for sponsoring the competition and hosting the videos.
