convex vs flat beckers for feather sticks?

I have a cpl bark river knives (bravo 1 swedge and canadian special) and they are very good knives but a bit over priced in my opinion. The canadian special is the better of the 2 due to it being 3v... Used it tons and have yet to touch up the blade. However i feel bang for the buck you can't beat the beckers. They are very tough, have very good edge retention and in my experience once convexed (even by my low level skills, all credit to the worksharp!) you would be hard pressed to noticed a cutting difference between factory convexed blades like fallkniven and bark river.

I finally got around to putting a convex edge on the bk24 i recently pick up and while it did come very sharp it is now at the point that I am sure I could feather stick an eye lash....

Not an eyelash, but human hair "feathered". :D

I like a convexed edge, I'm not very good a free hand sharpening (but getting better).
Enter the Work Sharp knife and tool sharpener. Some say its cheating some like it, Opinions are like ...., but it produces a great edge with little practice.

One thing that I found concerning a factory "V" edge is that its a V. I know I know that sounds redundant but if you knock the shoulder off of the factory grind or re-profile it to a more acute angle, say 15 degree's each side, it will have less drag on what ever material you are cutting and "feel" more slicey.
Lately I have been convexing the edge on the Work Sharp to 20 degrees then touching up the apex on an extra fine diamond plate and stropping on a paint stirrer with green BRKT compound and getting the best of both worlds a micro bevel "V" edge backed up by a convex primary grind. Slicey and tough with a lot of metal backing up the cutting edge.

I convex almost all my Beckers now.

And replace your BK16????? Are you nuts? Take that $120 and buy two more BK16's. :D:D

I've got the Bark River Bravo 1 and it is my sharpest knife. Not sure if it is the steel or what but I can get it beyond razor sharp..... if that's even possible.
Also have the TOPS BOB and that is a nice sharp convex edge as well.

Hey guys! I convexed my bk16 first, then I convexed everything else :D I'm lovin it! The only one I didn't convex is my 15, then I tried making feathers with both, I don't know how I survived without convex!

I ordered some sandpaper in grits 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000,and 2500. Then I got 4 paint stirring sticks and three mouse pads, also some super glue. Makes a great convex sharpener!

That's awesome Kid!! I was the same way. I tried it about 3 years ago on a beater knife I had when I was a kid and then started doing it to almost all my blades.

The next thing you will want to do is buy or make a strop if you don't already have one. Get some compound and your all set!

I have with black and white compounds, I should have made my own because I paid $25 for what is essentially a paint stick with some leather glued to it and a couple of lumps of compound :o Oh well, I'm glad I have it and it works great.

I though about A work sharp but I'm happy with the edges I'm getting with the sandpaper.

Thanks for the help guys!
