convex?

I have reconditioned convex edges in the field with a stone and a strop/belt without any problems at all for decades now. It is my favorite edge profile and I use it on all my knives.

also, if I may throw in my own question....can you take a traditionally ground knife, and put a convex grind on it using the methods used for sharpening a convex edge, with a more aggressive grit? ....if that makes any sense....

Here is my FH9 that I did exactly that, re-profiled the beveled edge and convexed it. Took about 45 - 50 minutes starting with 220 grit sandpaper and a mousepad and working my way up to 1500 grit (220 - 320 - 400 - 600 - 1500) NOTE: 3G is hard steel, about 62HRC, softer steels would profile in less time.

Then I finished with a few passes on a strop.

Hope you can see the difference OK in the photos.

I wonder if field maintenance isn't a moot point to some degree? Granted, I'm rarely out in the wilds for more than 3-4 days but I can't recall ever dulling a knife so much that it was appreciably harder to use.

Is field maintenance a big issue with quality knives?
