convexing bk2

I checked out virtuovoice's video convexing the BK and the ESEE. Impressive work. I was considering convexing my BK, then decided to just convex the edge, not the entire bevel. It will shave now, and preserved the coating (which, as much as I like naked steel, I realize is beneficial for an outdoors knife of carbon steel). Once the coating wears more, I'll consider convexing the full bevel.

I, however, used, and will always use, a piece of leather (8 oz. thickness) instead of a mouse pad. I like the better control, and the flatter profile.

Thank you for the help. I was successful at getting a hair-popping convex on my BK-2 yesterday!

The video link above was also very helpful in pointing out the difference between older and newer mousepads. I was using a newer one that didn't have much give to it, and therefore didn't work for convexing. The older ones are softer and work much better.

Switched mousepads, started at a much lower grit and stayed there until the burr formed, and viola!

Thanks again. I don't feel so ignorant about convexing anymore.

Didn't even think about the mousepad thing - when I started, I just found an unused one and went to work. But yes - forming a bur is as critical with convex sharpening as it is with regular V-grinds. Probably more-so since you're generally re-profiling the blade when adding a convex edge.

Anyways, glad to hear it went well and that my suggestions helped!
