What should I use to convex? I want to get those shiny high edges people are able to get. Sandpaper is cheaper, but is it more, just as or less effective then a coarse or fine stone? For getting a sheene, do you just use plain leather strop? Or do you need compound applied to leather?

What's the mouse pad thing? Does that make it shine and smoother?

Thanks.

Heres how I do it. Note the mousepad underneath.

I am using an old leather belt loaded up with green mibro polishing compound. This is after using wet\dry paper from 600 up to 2000 grit to achieve the edge.

Sandpaper works very well IMO because you can use a very low grit. Ive used 220 before to achieve the initial reprofiling. Here are the results.

Mousepads are used as a working surface under sandpaper or a loaded strop because they have a bit of "give" to them. This makes it easy to get a fairly uniform convex shape on the bevel. On the other hand, you could use a piece of glass under sandpaper for a uniform flat bevel.

It seems to me that sandpaper is easier to learn to use than stones. Plus a variety pack of various grits will only set you back a few bucks, and is enough for lots of sharpening.
