convexing on stones???

I started doing this lately,and it works well....watched few videos on youtube and its not hard at all....anuone else doing this?
 
I've been doing it this way for almost a year now - can't recommend it enough - easier than maintaining a V bevel. I can't imagine ever going back to sandpaper just to convex an edge.
 
I wish I could get a V edge on stones and free hand. If you are free handing then the outcome will be convex.

Are you rocking the blade or maintaining a consistent angle that you change with each pass?
 
More or less I keep the angle for each pass. The most important thing is to make sure you hit a bit longer just behind the apex, and sneak up on the apex as you go. When I hit the apex the angle is held rock steady. There's a lot less metal lined up at the apex with a convex edge - only requires a few passes to grind the very edge and then back down into the back bevel. Its very easy to make the inclusive angle overly broad, but that's a danger with a mousepad and sandpaper too.

Stropping smooths out all the visual differences between the passes very easily.

Yup I've been useing a stone to convex for years. If I'm creating the convex profile I rock useing a scrubbing motion forwards and back. If I'm just touching up an edge I use a forward stroke only.
 
I always strop with a stone. I try to keep a reasonably low angle. I don't try to keep the same angle. the reason why I decide to strop was becuase I couldn't sharpen with the edge forward stroke. I think that stropping is way more forgiving if you are not good at free hand. I think that using the edge forward stroke can destrop the edge with a single wrong angle stroke. Edge trailing stroke just doesn't seem physically to have this possibility unless the angle is way off, that is you are intentionally trying to dull the edge. I tried to comment on this last time but was told that it is not the case. With the way I strop, I know I'm ending up with a convex edge. I get my knives pretty sharp but not like scary sharp. I still cant do that yet, I may need a leather strop charged with chromium or diamond or boron carbide. I haven't had the time to try ally these as yet. Too many things to do after retirement.

With the Sharpmaker I use the edge forward stroke and get very good edges.
 
bill, try taking a 2x72 400 grit belt and fasten it to a benchtop so you can push down and not have the belt sag much. use the belt as you would a strop and work up a burr with the belt. then use the backside of the belt with some compound on it as a strop to finish off the edge. you should be able to get it shaving sharp that way.
