Convince me i don't need a BK5

DUDE, it goes like this:

You simply CAN'T, NOT HAVE a: BK-2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17...............................................................................:D

I bought a used Camillus BK5 off the exchange a few years back and It's one of the few beckers in my line up with no role to fill. It doesn't chop to my liking and overall too big for just cutting carving. Don't dislike it but there's no love connection.

I don't feel fit for the quest you wish me to embark upon. The BK5 is one of my dearest o' knives and I shall not take it's name in vain...

Anyway, just get a 5 already. It's clear you want one

Well this thread turned out to be an epic fail. However you do tend to tell me just what i want to hear:P
I love this place...
Seems my next becker will be a 5.

OK I will bite. You don't need a BK-5. There I said it. :D In reality most of use really don't need more than a medium sized knife, however we all like to have different knives and that is cool. Shoot I really don't need most of the stuff I own, and therefor am trying to down size. This sometimes means getting rid of multiple things and buying something else that will fill a need better.

So back to the subject at hand. A BK-5 for game processing seems like overkill and that it would make things harder on you. I have skinned, quartered, and processed deer on remote islands in Alaska with just a small 3" Opinel folding knife. Did a great job with that little knife as it is sharp as heck and holds a nice edge. A 3-4" blade is much more suited to field dressing and processing game. I wouldn't want to use the bk-5 on squirrel, rabbit, chicken, goat or other smallish animals either.

Now if you want the BK-5 just because you think it is cool and you can find use for it doing some food prep in the kitchen or in camp, great. You will probably like it and if you don't someone here will pick it up from you in no time.

Take care,
Greebe

It doubles as a pretty decent fish filleting knife also. I had one a ways back, lent it out, never got it back. I sent The Warrior a Brute and he was recently kind enough to get a new 5 enroute to me. I am more than happy with that news.
It is a lot of knife for very little weight. Even if you don't want it for outdoor use, it is a hell of a kitchen food prep tool. I have pics of doing fish and hacking up a xmas tree somewhere, i'm tired of looking at them. Time to make some new pics when this enjoyable blade comes in.

Ya know i had the same dilemma but with an Esee 5....I did alot of research and didn't think I would need anything that BEEFY but i keep thinking about it and finally I just bought one...It took all of 10 seconds after taking the knife out of the package to realize Im probably not going to need something this beefy BUT I don't regret the purchase I have used it !! and its always a good idea to have options ya never know when you might need a large blade so just buy it...!!! 2014-04-24_18-07-45_228.jpg 2014-04-24_18-06-46_491.jpg

Alright, you're starting to convince me i might not need it as much as i've been telling myself... But you'll never convince me i don't want it. There, i said it. I don't NEED 8-10 inch blades, firearms with all kinds of tacticool bad-assery and backpacks sturdy enough to double as bombshelters... But i want em :D

Well said. I think we all have and want way more than we "need" but that doesn't stop us from getting more. Many a Beckerhead has multiples of the same model. I currently own two 14's two 24's & three 9's, don't tell my wife :D. What's that all about?
I think it's about having options and lots of cool stuff. As long as I can still pay all my bills and take care of my wife and daughter's wants, I'm ok with buying more than I need.

Convincing somebody not to own any Becker is damn near impossible.
Almost any BK will serve you well in Hunting/Fishing.

The 5 & 15 have got to be the 2 fishiest knives of the Beckers I've seen. Granted, there will be none of that flexible, fillet knife nonsense with a BK!! :barf:

I've been known to fillet fish with non-flexible blades, and just tonight ordered a BK5. I can see a 15 on the horizon even now. :foot:
Too many irons in the fire? I can relate ... back to the grindstone with me.

If you are human or a reasonable facsimile thereof, you need a BK-5. It's just that simple.
Can you exist without one? Possibly but why would you want to?
