Convince me not to get a Spyderco

I'm looking for a new EDC. I love Spyderco and everyone knows it. I currently EDC PM2. I'm leaning towards the Delica, Endura, Manix, or a different PM2.

I have a Native, Civilian, Delica (serrated), and a Police model also. They're all great knives and I love how they feel in pocket. The quality is amazing.

I don't any experience with any other higher end brands because I've always been keen to Spyderco.

So my question is, should I get something else? If so, why?

Recommendations and reasons would be greatly appreciated.

I want something that's good quality with a 3-4 inch blade. Handle material and lock type are not an issue.

I personally believe the Manix 2 LW is the best knife ever. So i would say get that one. Extremely light for the size, tough, awesome lock, awesome ergos. If you want tougher they make the g10 Manix as well. 😉

Why? Spyderco is one if the best all-round brands out there, if you're liking what they make why not continue buying it?

Endura is a great all-around knife! You should be happy with it. Robust and good ergonomics.

If you want to try something different and practical, try a Benchmade Griptilian or Rift. They are simple, well made, efficient knives, yet a bit overpriced IMO.

I've gone to knife shops to check out Benchmades. I don't care too much for how they feel in hand. Especially the Grip or Mini Grip. Especially for the price.

But I agree with all of you. These are the same arguments I make when people tell me to try other brands.

Benchmade Grip, ZT 0562, Kizer Rogue, Reate Hills, Southern Grind Spider Monkey, ZT 0450, Benchmade 94x, are all great knives that you should consider rather than another Spydie.

Kershaw has some nice lower-end knives like the Leek and the Blur, neither of which are very much like a Spyderco, and Benchmade has the Rift and Griptilian line along with their budget HK line as well which has some good offerings. I recently got a Pika II from BM that's about as close to a Spyderco I've ever seen a Benchmade get, while still being pretty different in the details.

While I love PM's, I find myself going back to Enduras. I have a Super Blue that is really hard to leave in the box. Hap 40 is right behind it and I have a saber ground ZDP that is probably my hardest use knife out of all my Spydercos. Manix is great, but does not carry as easily as the Endura - its pretty wide. Seeing as how you have a Police, the Endura would be pretty close in comparison - i find the Endura easier to use. For me, the Delica is just a touch small. I would also look at the Stretch. Or a Military. Or... take you pick! All kidding aside, I would go with an Endura or a Stretch. If you could find a CF ZDP189 Stretch, you would have a hard time putting it down. I think the Stretch is the one of the most ergonomic Spydercos out there. That being said, the Military is my favorite Spyderco platform.

Variety is the spice of life! I love my Spydercos, but I also love my ZT 0909, my Kizer Sovereign, and my RealSteel H5 and H6.

There are a lot of great choices. Personally, sticking to one manufacturer just isn't my thing, no matter how much I love my Spydercos, ZTs, etc.

I'm trying hard to think of reasons you shouldn't get another Spyderco ...

Why? Nothing else (studs, discs, flippers) measures up when compared to the hole. (my opinion)

Don't overlook the $20.00 FRN Byrd Cara Cara. Light weight, excellent ergonomics and at a price that doesn't make one second guess using it.

The best reason to get something other than a Spyderco(I'd go with a Kershaw/ZT) is cause I consider the opening hole one of the worst opening systems, and that's pretty much the only option with Spyderco. I find it a lot more difficult to open a knife using the hole than I do a flipper or thumbstud, and while it doesn't matter to me personally, I also find it slower than the other systems, unless you ghetto wave it. Add to that the comparatively unpleasant aesthetics of it, and I'd be much, MUCH happier if Spyderco would do something without it.

Awesome. ;):D:thumbup:

I'd suggest a Gayle Bradley either the first (solid liners) or second release (skeletonized liners) Gen 1. version. I currently have one of each and it's a phenomenal knife IMHO and is the perfect EDC folder. I had a second release Gen. 1 previously and sold it so it had to be replaced of course. ;)

They're even better with custom scales LOL; I made both sets.

If you get one...I'll call you poopy pants stinky face.

That's really all about I can come up with.

My personal opinion is that I could be happy ONLY owning Spyderco knives these days. However, I like variety and trying different things out. Of the ones you mentioned, I'd go for the Delica (plain edge) now and look at one of the higher end Spydies later. The Delica carries very easily and I use it as a benchmark when judging whether or not I am likely to like a new knife (size wise). That's how I chose the ZT 0770CF as I wanted to try out a ZT, didn't particularly want a pocket brick, and wanted something that I might actually carry versus just fondle at my desk.

Buy what interests you, man. Get what you like. Other brands have loads to offer, but that doesn't mean that any of them strike your interests.

If you force yourself to branch out, you'll likely be disappointed and only reinforce your brand loyalty because there will be certain aspects you have come to expect that will be absent in other brands' offerings.

Your horizons will broaden when you want them to, and knives are subject to so many aspects of personal taste that even I am surprised at what knives strike my interest. I wrote off the RAT Worx MRX chain drive auto as an overpriced gimmick when it was released and it's now in my pocket and one of my favorite knives of all time. Go figure!

Very true! You'll know when it's time to branch out.......in the meantime, I'd say to go with a Millie, very cool sprint out now, or a G10 blurple Manix 2. The blurple Manix in s110v is nothing short of amazing!
Good luck!
Joe
