Convince Me to Keep My BK 2

The 2 is the best batoning knife I own, unless I need to work on really big logs in which case I prefer the 9. The thickness of the 2 really helps with batoning. In my book, that's the one thing the 2 does better than just about any other blade. Apart from that, versatility reigns with the 2. It does a lot of things reasonably well.

Keep it, or you'll wake up next to this man, and you'll feel violated.

That is the look of a man that has seen some things. Terrible terrible things. Also the look of a man I wouldn't let near my dog...

I personally never understood this knife. It short and weighs as much as a hatchet so I don't see why someone would carry it in the field when a better tool can be carried for the same weight penalty. Or a tool like a machete for less weight. I also don't see where someone would need a 1/4" thick knife in the woods. Thick knives are better for prying but what is it that you're prying in the woods? As far as urban emergencies I can't see how this would be any better then a SAK and an actual prybar or a small breaching tool. I have a Scrapyard 711(which is bigger AND weighs LESS) so I know how cool knives like this are but I really see no practical application for them when the weight of the tool is considered. YMMV but I would sell it if I were you.

So, you don't have one?

I count my 2 amongst my best of friends...not always the best, brightest, easiest, or best looking of friends, but it'll always be there in a pinch. Pretty darn sure it'll outlive me, and look after my kids in the future, too.

When I designed this blade I was in my early German overkill phase.......Yes, it IS overkill which, is it's continuing appeal to me......My favorite quote about the Campanion (BK 2) is from the late and great Chuck Karwan who said that it was the perfect knife if you had to field dress a Buick...... It will and has done that and it will also field dress a deer or a bit awkwardly, a squirrel...... It batons beautifully and carves well enough to make a fire kit and does credible fuzziness.... It is pretty close to soldier proof and if what it does to a deer carcass is any indication I do not care to have a wound channel created by one anywhere in my body...... Is it light and incredibly handy in the paw, well, no it is not..... There is however, a certain inevitability about it ....... It will cut what you need cut.......It will Make a crud load of cooking splits in a hurry, it will carve and fuzz and there are no worries about it not being around to do it tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow unto the end of time....... And if ya gotta pry a loved one outta the family sedan well, you could do a lot worse........I had an old series II Land Rover and it had that same Pinzgauer like feel of inevitability.......The good news is the Campanion does NOT come with a Lucas electrical system..... It will ALWAYS work for you........

Inevitability is good .......

I'm a new guy here but have been lurking for a while. A few months ago I began searching for what I would consider to be the one and only knife I would want to have in my possession in a survival situation. In true anal Quality Engineer fashion I searched, read, researched, read and researched some more but was always left wanting. The closest I found was an ESEE but it still didn't quite scratch the itch for me. Then one day while Googling and purely by chance I saw something on the images page that stopped me cold in my tracks. I didn't even know what kind of knife it was but I knew that it was 'THE ONE'. Clicking on the picture took me to this forum and the wonders of a BK-2 was revealed to me like some sort of prophetic vision. I couldn't order one quickly enough and once it arrived and I held it in my hand, I was hooked. Within a week I bought a BK-11, BK-16 and BK-9 just to round-out the field, outfitted them all with mircarta scales and began rounding-up all the 60+ knives that I have accumulated over the years in what now seems a fruitless search for the perfect, all-in-one, do-anything, indestructible, save-my-ass in a SHTF situation knife. If it gets any better than the BK-2, I haven't found it. Probably not a knife for everybody but it certainly meets all the criteria for what I wanted. If I am to ever find myself homeless, this is the knife I want to have with me. I can see myself buying a couple of more in the coming months and most of the other 60+ knives that are now sitting in a box on the floor of my home office finding their way onto eBay.

Great points Ethan! Thanks for the insight! Now I'm not so sure I want to get rid of it...

If you are not hurting for funds, I would keep it just for the fact it is a solid tool and never get rid of a solid tool unless you really need to for one reason or another. That being said, the 2 is my least favorite Becker I have owned. Too thick and stubby to be practical, too heavy to justify carrying. I traded my 2 and havent thought twice about it...but I traded it for a 9

Hey A1Paracord......
&
Mojo.....

A1......
Give it another shot and thanks for reading my comments.....

And MOJO.....

I really like the way you think.....LOL.......

And thanks to both of you for buying Becker knives........I do really appreciate it.......

I love my Becker Knives,

My favorite full size Beckers always come down to two different blades, the BK2 and the BK7. Ask me which is my favorite, and I'll most likely say which ever one I took out last. They are at a constant battle for my full attention.

Just looking at your BK2, I would say you should take it out, and use it some more, a lot more. Build a splitwood fire, make a bowdrll setup and use it, skin a catfish, make a shelter, open a can of pork and beans, clean your fingernails, use the pommel and smash some walnuts, strike a firesteel, cross baton an old piece of hickory, shave the hair off your fore arm, and last but not least, put it to work.

Then see if you still like it. It's a robust blade for sure, if its your only knife you use for a while, it will become an extension of your arm.

Alright, I'm going to keep it for now, put some more use into it and see what I come up with. Thanks everyone!

For me I like to have options depending on how many knives I am carrying among other factors. If I am only carrying one... It is no question the bk2. It is versatile and if I don't have a back up, the 1/4 inch steel whispers "everything is going to be ok". If I can carry two... Bk16 and bk9. If I can carry three... Bk14, bk10 and bk9. Etc. and this is how I rationalize owning so many knives. My wife made me laugh the other night when I was talking about a knife that would be great for building a shelter. She said, "honey, if you stacked up all your knives, you would have a better shelter than our home". I responded by asking her how many pairs of shoes she owns:). Great thread. That bk2 quote Ethan wrote is a classic.

It IS a BAD knife!! Also, it doesn't cost you anything to keep it. lol I wouldn't let it go. It does get lonely though, needs more companions.

I can appreciate not feeling like you have a use for the 2, until you need to break into acorn squash, split a tree root, and make a new Christmas ornament.... All with one blade. I don't use it as much as my 16 or 24, but it offers a nice peace of mind that I could baton through a cinder block if need be.

That was my thought process when I first picked it up but after having it sit around while I used other knives I wasn't so sure. However, I think I've come back around to that way of thinking. It's a knife that can do anything at anytime and will always have your back. For that reason I think I'm keeping it. Thanks for the comments!

Damn you and this thread! I don't have a 2. I've never really wanted a 2. I keep a 3 in my car. But now I have the itch to try a 2! I do have (and... shhhhhhh.... carry) my 10. It is a great blade to me. Not sure how I really feel about drop points.
