Convince Me

I don't like the mythology or fanboy fetish level love for tanto and katana.

Get a Bowie, its legit designed for fighting and general survival and bushcraft.

As far as I can tell the tanto was made for a tragic ending of it's owner including women.
I do like Coldsteel but not fanboy and I am married 26 years now. I just like tantos okay? Ever since my time in Okinawa and mainland Japan I have been fascinated by knife designs from the time of the Samurai. I know that the Coldsteel tanto is American made I still like it.

Maybe you just need to see more pictures of it :D

Really been looking at the Recon Tanto 3v and I was wondering why a person needs a fixed blade tanto outside of the military? Please know I am not flaming the Recon Tanto, in fact it's the opposite! I just think it's the Bee's Knee's so to speak. I just want to know how it would fit into my stuff? Thanks in advance for your time and patience.
Same reasons you'd need any other fixed blade in that size range. In my experience, the only area where something like the Recon Tanto would really fall short of a clip or drop point would be skinning. The advantage that it has is the secondary edge and point that can more easily be used to scrape, lightly chisel and score than other blade shapes.

Like the CS Rep said, if you're curious grab one in SK5. Those can be had for under $40 if you look around and you'll either get a fun knife that you like to look at but don't use much, or a tool you enjoy that might eventually be worth upgrading to the 3V version. Sounds pretty win-win to me.

No, that's not what it was made for. Up to the mid 1800s the tanto was carried by common people who wanted to carry a weapon concealed. Because they were not of the Bushi class (Samurai class) who were permitted to carry Katanas and Wakizashi. And seppuku was specific only to the Samurai class of people.
It's true that the Tanto is a weapon. The Japanese had (and have) a blade for nearly every specific purpose. The idea of an all-purpose knife does not apply to the tanto.
There are traditional Japanese hunting knives that come closer to the idea of an all purpose knife.
Many people in the military today choose to carry a tanto type knife because it is a weapon design. That there are other applications, some which the blade design does well and others not, is simply coincidence.

I ve bought one tanto folder in the past. The tanto doesn t supply any advantage for me in my work knife. I won t buy another.
