Convincing parents to let me buy a BM42....

Hey all,
I am totally new to the Balisong world, and was wondering something. I really like the Benchmade M42, but it is a lot of money for me to spend. I don't have a problem with that, but my parents will. They don't object to the knife itself, just the money I spend on it.

My plan is to get a crappy Jag or something to practice with that won't cost too much, and then when it breaks tell them that I'll have to get a BM42 so it won't break. Sound good?
smile.gif
My main question is are Jaguars bad enough that they'll break after a short time? And are the Benchmades all that they're ed up to be?

One more thing. Are the moves and tricks and whatnot on www.balisongxtreme.com pretty good? I mean, the pics and instructions seem good enough, but I'm still totally ignorant about such things. Thanks for any info!

Tell your parents that you've carefully researched this purchase. The BM42 is more expensive, but it's also significantly more durable. The currently-available alternatives are aimed at people who are not serious about balisong manipulation and those knives will not withstand the type of use that you intend to give your new knife. So, it is most economically prudent to invest in the 42.

Your parents will be impressed that you've carefully considered this purchase.

As my sainted father used to say, "The joy of low price fades quickly amidst the bitterness of poor quality."

and yes, balisongxtreme.com rules. At least I hope it does as I've learned everything from there

balisongxtreme.com is fantasticly amazing!!! Regarding the 42 and Jags, let me put it this way: most of us on the forums, when given a brand new Jag, can turn it into several peices with just about 5-10 minutes of manipulation. If you take that same manipulation, amp it up about 10 times, increase the force at which you do the manipulations, and you used my 42 which I have manipulated every day for 1 year (well, one year on 6/28) the 42 would take it with ease and would just ask for more. I have had no problems with my 42, I've taken a blow torch to it to change the color of the handles, than I sanded the handles so the color would be the original silver again, I've beaten this thing up and I try my most difficult techniques on it and it stays strong and trustworthy. It is amazing the difference between a jag and a 42. We can go through 10 jags (about $200) in about 1/1000000th the time that someone can go through a 42 (some places about $100).

Thanks for all the info about balisongxtreme.com. I just told my mom that my balisong choices were:
1) Jaguar for $25 that would break very soon;
2) Bear MGC for $50 or so that would break somewhat soon;
3) Benchmade 42 for $125 that would never break. Her response was a flat, "No. Spending $125 on another knife is stupid." So that leaves me in a quandary. Do I appeal to my dad (who is not as understanding about knives as I could wish for), get a Bear and break it, or just buy a BM42 anyway and probably have it either taken away or not be able to get any more knives for like a year? Or one other thing. If I don't get any knives for about 10 months or so, I can say that since I haven't had a new knife for almost a year, I should be able to buy the BM42. I usually spend about $50 on a knife and get a new one about every 5-6 months. Input?

Here's what I would do... Get yourself a Jaguar. They're cheaper than bears, and in my opinion a better knife. Yes, it will break in no time at all, but do not fear! Jaguars are easily repairable. In fact, the sooner it breaks, the better. I must have explained this a dozen times on the forums

, so just read this thread...

Alright, now play with your new "refurbished" Jaguar until it is beyond repair. THAT is when you ask to get the BM42. Tell them that your jaguar only lasted a short while and this is a "hobby" you really want to to pursue. It's more than a knife, it's a skill. Let them know how much money you can save by buying just one BM instead of dozens of jags, as Cameron so elequently pointed out. But, since the BM42 sounds a little out of your reach right now, I think that practicing with a Jag and developing skills will show them you're serious. Show 'em WHY you want to "waste" money.

Yeah, I'm not saying that Jags are complete crap, but after you buy a 42 your whole perspective on balisongs change (regarding quality). One of my first balisongs was a Jag, it was great, the weight of the bali helps build strength in your fingers/hand so when you get BM balisongs you can control them very easily. I've been thinking of getting one last Jag just before I go to college so I can repair the pins and take it with me, if it gets taken away then I'm only out $20, better than being out over $100 IMO.

Have they seen a picture of the knives? If not buy the 42 ang tell them its a Jag, just make sure YOU get the box from UPS. With a little luck I think you could pull it off.
If you do get caught its like Peguin said, "Its easier to ask for forgiviness than for permission".

LOL to all! Unfortunately, I went to the knife shop today and handled a 42 and a Bear. Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm a coward, but I didn't feel comfortable with the general design of either. Not that it was the brands, it's just the whole balisong style that kind of puts me off. Plus, I handled the BM Ares 735 and am totally wanting that now. Same problem enhanced, because it's $145. Perhaps if I lay a little money aside each week when I get a job, buy it and then tell them I saved for months and that it was only $75....

I may still get a Jag and just try to work up the courage to play with it. Perhaps electrical tape will help.

oh, man, don't get a bear! they have a tragic flaw: thy will break just as soon as jags will, but you cannot fix a bear. when a jag breaks, the pins weaken and snap. these are easily replaceable. when a bear breaks, the handles themselves crack and are beyond repair. many people have tried many things to fix bears, and he general consensus is: don't bother.
i suggest getting a jag for now, and then getting a better bali somewhere later along the line. especially since there are so many new ones coming out... how do you know you won't want one of those instead of a 42?
peace.

Asha'man, first a question. Is that Irish in your signature, and where did you learn it? Secondly, here's how you deal with your parents. Tell them you need the money for crack. That its not really as bad as everyone makes out and they should try some too. Tell them that you're thinking about a career as a dealer and that this "investment" should help you make up your mind. Explain that you're going to buy them a new house and a really fine car "when you make the big time." And that if you do well with crack that you might move on to heroin or maybe Amway. That will stun them. When you sense that they are at their weakest point (emphasize that they don't even have to sell soap, just get others to do it for them) offer to spend the cash on the 42, instead. See if they'll go the extra 10 bucks for the anodized handles, it doesn't improve the performance of the knife but it looks cool, and will impress your friends.

Good luck,
Bill

Don't pay $145 for a 735, that's way too much. You can get them at 1SKS.com for about $105.

Well - as off the wall I sometimes am I guess the other guys have given you the alecky answers for your parents
smile.gif
, but coming from a chinese family I know how you must feel.. but Chuck is right.. you have to bow to your parents it is th way life is..

as users I go for the BM42 and the Jaguar.. it's a nice knfei really IF you take the time to change the pins.. I was a skeptic too but I have replaced the pins on my jaguar once ala clay's site instructions and it's a TANk - i have yet to breaj it or whatnot and it's lasted this klong. you might not want to do that to your jag or else you wil never break it to show to your parents
tongue.gif

and what do you mean "ANOTHER" 125.00 knife? maybe THAT's why your parents seem so stingy to you =1...

at any rate it's the ssummer.. the only legittemate way to get one is to get a nice job work your ass off and in the end it will be worth it.. it is more gratifying to work for a prize anyways.
