Not really, when my son broke something I was sure not to get him another one to break. It was when he showed me how good of a job he took care of things that I would buy him more.

The arguement for buying a BM42 is that it's considered a very good investment. They hold their value very well, and have been know to go up in value quite a bit in the last 10 years.

When you compare it to a lot of things kids spend their money on, it's a good purchace. Take video games for example. You would be doing good if you can get half your money back out of them. Or some people like to collect baseball cards. If your in a hurry to sell, you have to sell to a dealer at half their value. A knife in comparison is very easy to sell for it's full value.

I have had lots of teenagers buy knives from me and resell them to their friends at a profit. So they came back to buy more. One guy was about 12 years old when he bought 30 or 40 knives from me. He sold them at a profit and them went into buying beanie babies. He sold them at a profit and came back to me to buy knives to sell again.

Of course compared to spending money on something like a concert or an amusement park is a no brainer, sense that is money that is basicly pissed down the toilet and gone forever. You well never see any return on that.
 
I find a bit of nostaligia in Mr. John7R's post.. yes in my family too - I proved my worth by takgin care of something.

If it's going to be THAT much trouble and your parents don't think that it's worth the money, show them the respect they want and get the Jag. If you break it you can always let your parents know that 20-30 dollars was wasted on a bad judgement and from now on to leave the knife shopping to you. I was lucky, when I was 8 years old I walked downstairs on Easter sunday and found a dozen throwing stars in my Easter basket, they bought me knives too, but now my taste in knives is much more elite than when I was a child, trust me anyone who is'nt a knowledgeable blade aficionado will not be able to warrent the cost of most high quality knives.
