Can you cook in a SIGG aluminum water bottle?
What about the ones that are painted.

Can't seem to find a Guyot.

How about the cheaper Stainless steel ones?

I want something for everyday water and want to be able to sit it on top of my penny stove to heat the water at times..

STOP!! DO NOT COOK OR BOIL WATER IN THE SIGG! It has a coating over the aluminum inside the bottle that is questionable whether it contains the BPE's found in Nalgenes. Also, the paint will bubble, flake and burn off. Only boil or cook in an uncoated 100% stainless bottle like the Guyot or Klean. Check out the Bean Kanteen, the old USGI metal canteen or any of the other great stainless bottles out there.

I think the SIGG's are coated with something on the inside, but I don't know what. I would be carefull heating one up.

There you have it, Kevin has much more experience than I do.

Has anyone heard anything about removing the inside coating? I haven't researched it at all but I've been considering it for a while. I have a bunch of Sigg bottles and when Guyot came on the scene I was cursing the Sigg linings.

Would it be possible to burn off the lining with heat or with acid that does not attack aluminum?

The whole reason that they coat the aluminum is that uncoated aluminum is unsafe to cook on.

I always heard that the interior of Siggs had some kind of ceramic lining to keep it taste free. And only one or two didnt have the lining - one was the Flask one, with the cup. But that one is made of stainless.

One of the REI employees told me that it's just the newest Sigg bottles that have the ceramic lining. Take it with an appropriate grain of salt since I got the impression that he was a summer hire that wasn't very knowledgeable.

The Sigg has an epoxy coating certified, says SIGG, not to leach anything. Still seems questionable to put it to flames.

There is a decade of science to support leaching from Type 7 plastic (hard Lexan polycarb), unless you look at studies financed by the plastics industry. Those studies say it's perfectly safe.

The WaterGeek 32 oz SS bottle I mentioned weighs 6.2 oz.
The Klear Canteen 27 oz. weighs 8 oz.
The Guyot 32 oz. weighs 12.3 oz.

I know they say aluminium are unsafe to use for heating water and that the Lexan bottles can kill you. I dont give a **** (insert profanity).
There are much more things out there in the society that will probably "kill" you faster.
If I wanted to heat water though I would get a Trangia stove, or a Swedish army mess kit, or the mug that goes around the US water bottle or the Trangia lunch box with a handle.

Has anyone used a Kleen regularly for boiling/cooking? The reason I ask is that the Guyot website says to absolutely use their bottle for that purpose. The Kleen website say that you can do it "in a pinch." Kind of sounds like they are saying you can do it, but we don't really want you to.

I am just wondering if the kleen is thinner than the guyot or if there is something that would keep you from treating it as harshly?

:thumbup:picked up 2 Kleen Kanteen 40 oz. bottles about a week ago. can't find anything to complain about, love these things. some say the seal is faulty but haven't had any problems with the bottles.

Kleaned them with some kind of dishwashing powder, half bottle of hot water and a tsp of the powder, shook them up and rinsed. no metalic taste.

i highly recommend these bottles.

a cheap stainless steel waterbottle would be from enviro products

im not sure if its coated inside, but i did get mine from a thrift store and i think they only come tinted, but i am not positive, i may just fill it with water and boil it for a bit to get rid of the paint stuff then sand it a little with some wetdry paper

A heads-up to my fellow Canucks. I looked at the Canadian Tire flyer yesterday and they are advertising stainless steel bottles. Haven't checked it out yet. When I do, I'll report back, unless somebody beats me to it.

I got over and checked them out. Non-removable plastic around the top so it would create problems boiling water in it. Also very light stainless steel. I could easily flex the sides. I wasn't too impressed. I'll stick with my Guyot.
