Cooking small game

I have never eaten anything including fish that I haven't gutted first. I always wondered though if it was an absolutely essential thing to do before cooking. Especially in a survival situation. I know that it isn't that much extra work but anything you don't have to do, why do it? Thats why I have asked the question. I probably would do it just because I don't know if you shouldn't, but I was wondering if anyone on this site had first hand experience or medical data to prove that you should always do it or lots of native wisdom that says it isn't necesarry.

So far its still not clear to me. Except for the fish which sounds like it may be OK. Cooking the meat well of some animals sounds like it is essential. I know that some organs of certain animals must be cooked before eating and some organs of some animals shouldn't be eaten at all. But removal of the entrails isn't clear to me.

Oh yeah and the comment about the liver is correct. It filters many poisons including many medication that people and domestic animals take. I probably wouldn't touch any liver. But thats just my personal opinion. Not that I am suggesting eating people by the way. Domestic animals depending on the situation is another matter.

kr1 - I think you sort of have your head around it. Animal meat should generally be cooked well before eating, whether the animal is gutted or not. Leaving the internal organs in the animal is not likely to present a health risk - it is more about taste than safety. In a survival situation where skinning and gutting may not be viable, cooking the whole animal should be ok. Why not try it and see how it affects taste.
