just curious what angles other spydie lovers sharpen their knives too.

So just state what you sharpen with and the angle you normaly use.

I use a sharpmaker and typicaly sharpen my knives to 40* but my millie I keep at 30* .

I sharpen all of my knives at a 22.5-30 depending on how thick the blade is and what I use it for. I prefer the 22.5.

Nearly all my pocket knives are 12 deg per side, most have a 15 deg micro bevel, a couple have a not-so-micro bevel at 15 deg. My Pacific was once at about 7 deg per side with a larger unspecified microbevel, then I took it down to straight 7 deg per side and didn't like it, now it has a 12 deg microbevel and I am pretty happy.

wow those are really small angles. What steel do you sharpen down to 7 degrees?

I like 17 to 22 depending on the steel.

Hey Hobs, did you notice any work hardening on the Pacific after sharpening?

Not really, there are people here on the forums, who go lower than that, and the 7 deg per side was an exception for me because H-1 is so easy to grind (which answers your question: the Pacific is H-1 steel). Also note that those are deg. per side, not included angles. Considering that Spyderco knives come with approximately a 15 deg per side bevel, I would consider 22 deg per side excessive. I keep my two axes at around 20 deg per side and my big chopper at 15 deg per side, terminal angle. I know that some people have had bad experiences with S30V in the past, but my experience is that any steel that Spyderco uses in their knives will easily support a 12 deg per side terminal angle.

I haven't really seen much of a difference really. I have never been disappointed with H-1. Edgeholding is really good except on really abrasive stuff and even there, perceived edgeholding is very good with such a thin geometry, because you have quite a bit to abrade before you reach the threshold of unusable bluntness. H-1 doesn't tend to roll and is really capable of supporting such fine edge. But of course it is a very thin edge and in the way I use my pocket knives chipping became too frequent for my liking. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the chipping was undue. I think in a kitchen knife the H-1 would have held up very well at 7 deg per side, but using a pocket knife in a lab environment, occasionally applying pretty heavy sideloads and hitting hard materials here and there is just asking too much of such a thin edge (my $0.02 of course). Since applying a fairly small 12 deg. per side bevel, I am getting most of the performance and the edge holds up well.

I took my Delica4 down to around 10 per side, ~13 microbevel each side
Cuts as well as my opinel, which i cant estimate angles on. I full convexed my No.7 and its a thin edge.. scalpal sharp, but quite weak, in comparison to the Delica.
Anyway, go thinner on your spyderco's, they love it. VG-10 loves it, anyway, as far as my experience goes.
