I picked up the latest issue of Combat Knives. Michael Janich has a nice article in it on the various opening methods for one hand knives. Some of us here have heard of these methods, but were never sure of the proper way to do them. Mike does a good job of explaining how to perform them. Actually this magazine has many better than average articles. Just thought I would let you all know.

Combat Knives???
This is new to me. What month is this?
I want one.

Combat Knives is published by Petersen Publishing (Guns & Ammo, Handguns etc).

As far as I know they have only been published annually, though there was talk of increasing the frequency. I have only seen two issues. One in '98 and one so far this year. The '99 issue has the Bill Bagwell Bowie's on the front and says "display till July 5, 1999". It does have an article by Janich on the Camillus CUDA, and a small piece on one hand opening knives so this may be the one he is talking about.

The magazines are very good and I hope the do start publishing them more often, at least quarterly.

I agree, it was a nice article. I think this issue was, for the most part, better produced than last year's. There seemed to be better articles, pictures, and more info with less advertising in the stories themselves.

Haven't seen the newest Combat Knives. Previous issues were little more than very high-level, uncritical looks at knives that might as well have been written by the manufacturers themselves. In other words, this magazine has, in my mind, set a new standard for being uncritical and generally not-useful. Just my opinion, of course, but I calls 'em like I sees 'em. Hopefully they're improving with this newest issue!

I think the issue Richard talking about is the display until january/10/2000. The article is titled Grand Openings.

I have heard that Combat Knives is now going to be out twice a year. I have never been overly impressed by Combat Knives but I do see some potential. I have even heard that the newest issue has some info on fellow forumite Mike Sastre.

For what it's worth, I like it quite a bit. It's good reading when you're sitting on your John fondling a blade.

Ok, I just got my copy, along with the December Blade.
WooHoo, lots of good reading ahead.

I think I saw that one. Content was interesting as I'll read anything about knives, but wasn't too impressed with the finished copy. I'm not too keen on black and white photos. Thanks for the info, I always wondered why I never saw a newer issue. Published annually? By Jove that's a novel idea! Saves wear and tear on the presses!

I got mine on Wednesday. There is an excellent article by Bill Bagwell on the theory of Bowie Knife design. There is also a very good article on Mike Sastre's River City Sheaths, an article on how to use a Bowie by James Keating (but he does not describe how to do a "back cut"), a good article on locks, and an interesting article on Mission Knives that does not mention the CT knives made of G10. All in all, a better effort that the last one.

Sooo...
Where are you guys finding this rag?
I've tried Books-a-Million, Joe Mugg's and Barnes and Noble and nobody has'em.

Please advise!

misque, I dont know where you are, but in addition to Barnes and Noble (which didnt have it here either) we have a book store called Borders. They always seem to have all the knife rags.

I agree with some of the above that the first two issues were not that good, but this one really is an improvement. There is one writer in the last two that is missing from this one, which to me is the biggest improvement

I got my latest copy at SuperCrown books, but have seen them at Bookstar and also the previous issue last time I was at Tower Records book store here.
The article on the Spyderco Rookie and CS Bush Ranger "forced" me to get a stainless-handled Rookie, which is good, I guess, since the Rookie will be discontinued. Guess I'm a sucker for knives.

I live in a currently very wet and windy Fla.
I haven't seen any of the stores mentioned thus far so I might be SOL

I saw an issue of "Combat Knives" a couple of months ago and was not impressed. I don't want to be too critical, but the layout and overall look of the magazine didn't appear too professional: certainly not like "Blade". I will pick up the new issue though, as the articles you're talking about sound really interesting.

Combat Knives is interesting reading, but all they have to say about every maker, is nothing but good. They are not objective or up front about the blades they publish articles about.

I have also noticed that they've made many mistakes when describing the blades in the decriptions under the photos, in certain articles.

A real bummer is reading a article that they published about a custom maker, and then at the end of the article realizing they didn't print the address or phone number of the maker. They make it mighty hard to track down custom makers that they have written articles about, sometimes.

I've often heard people complain about this or that magazine not writing the "bad" things about certain products such as guns or knives. I've always assumed that, with space being such a premium, there is hardly enough room to report the good stuff, much less all the bad stuff too. I mean, how many crappy knives are out there that they could be writing about? Hundreds.
I just figure if they don't write about it then it's not any good. And remember, alot of these reviews are subjective. You know what opinions are like, and everybody has one.

Misque,
There are Borders in Fla. There is certainly one in Miami on US1, below Kendall Drive, across from Shorty's Barbecue (yummm). For those South American readers....below Dadeland Mall. Of course, unless I had a boat I would not get there....and then, I assume they are smart enough to be closed. Rain has stopped here in Kendall area of Miami, but it is still flooded around my house.

Before it got too bad, during a lull, I got rid of some branches that blew down. Busse Battle Mistress worked great. Will be some more to do later. What I mind is the small tree out back that split, it was a native tree.
